Middling Cotton Sold in Macon at 4 3-4 Cents Yesterday. point The cotton market retched _ yesterday that broke nil'records since the forties. Middling ootton so d in Ma con at 4 3-4 cents, at least 10 points off of the lowest price of the season, and nearly 20 points lower than It was a wnctj nso. Hundreds of bales were sold during the day at this ruinous price, there be ing a brisk local demand, with planters very willing to let the staple go at 43-4 cento, for fear they will have to give It away and pay somebody to take It pretty soon. The lowest nrlce received was 4 9-18 for a lot of off-grades, sold early In the day. A few speculators were almost tempted 4b put their money In cotton yesterday, with a view of holding, but with a probable excess of 4.500,000 hnles staring them In the face, they conclud ed not to temot Providence until the farmers have all taken that Iron-clad oath not to raise any more cotton for a year. One of his turkeys, a small one, took sick, and his wife gave it a teaspoonful; that was m the »veo.ug, and the little fellow turned over like he was dead, but next morning wi« up hollowlug and well. Your» -eipect- fully, J. N. M’ELROg. Savannah, Ga., March IT, 1891. Messrs. LIppman Bros., Savannih. Go.—Dear Sirs: I have suffered from rheumatism for a long time, tnJ did not find a cure until I found P. p. p which completely cured me. Yours truly, ELIZA F. JONES, 18 Orange street. Savannah, Gs. Truly wonders never cease. Since Macon became a city she has' no doubt had more than her full share of fakirs, agents.' peddlers, etc., and each of tb«jSniM managed to do at least a llttlia, business. The good peiple liavo patronized the tnan with the razor strop, the can opener, tbs patent med icine, the cork 6crew, the shaving soap, the plnchback Jewelry, the hand organ "and bagpipe, and were prepared to yield up their loose change for any thing except a tombstone, for who ever dreamed of a man peddling tomb stones? But It Is always the um-.v Peoted that happens, and yesterday < man Helling a patent tombstone struck the city.. IVhbre the man came from or who he W does not mutter, lie. Is sell.ng tombstones and doing a good bus.nes*. The tombstone Is made of Iron and fashioned after a nat ruck without tho pegs. Where the mirror Is located iu a hat rack Is a thick gln&s on tho tomb stone, beneath which Is n place for a photograph of the deceased and spy Inscr.ptloa that might he desired. The sample tho man had yesterday was about three feet high and weighed per haps a hundred pounds, beneath tbs glass was the picture of a lovely young girl and a little poem extolling her v'r- tues. Above the picture was the name, date of birth and death. . A Telegraph reporter ashed the man If he was do,ng much ousmess. "Yea,” said he; “I am doing fairly well for the fiwt day. So far I have taken four or ders aud am negotiating for a fifth. You see, X only talto orders and deliver whenever the purchasers desire. - Crowded around the tombstone were a number o!f negroes, and many of them Inquired about the price of it. Each wanted to buy one, and some of them begged the tombstone man not to leave town until they could raise tho money. The picture was evidently what caught the fancy of the negroes, and no doubt many of them will not oiiiy buy a tombstone, but have their plenaes taken no that lfter tliey are buried friends who cannot read will, by see ing their pictures over their gravis, know who Is burled there. , No one would think It,-but-the patent tomb stone business Is one that in likely ‘o become a great lnduslr" !u the near future. ■■ j BUY COTTON.
