A correspondent of the Greenwood,

cay of the famotu Beauvoir catate ol
Jefferson l)av'.t:
"Vie left Beauvoir ycaterday morning
quite early, anticipating * plea taut day
lu Biloxi, and must eay Unit wo en
joyed It far beyond our cxpc-ctationa.
We met many of the Hiloxiauv aud
fouud them a fair sample of our big-
hearted 'MjUippian*. A* we Journeyed
down the beach could be seen In the
distance the beautiful little city nest
ling by the «e.i, II* ilomes and spire*
reaching high ,n (be br.ght, blue sky.
UHe lovely panorama it presented,
though four tii.lea away, seemed hut
a »hort distance Ix-fore us. ll.laxi tn
a «lty of 7,000 Inhah.tanis: it has Ue-
llgbtfut' shell drives, graceful live oak
groves, splendid ha thing and Ushlng;
It not only delights ihe dimmer visitors
In scareh of cooling breax.4 and restful
shades, but' situated as It Is, on that
grand .rank line, ilie Louisville mid
Nashville railroad, with Its courteous
and obliging officers, makes it quite
u winter resort for ,nc visitor from ilia
frjgld North and bl.zaard stricken
west. While In this picturesque little
city we vi^ted the retin al aud hospita
ble home of Gen. and Mrs. Joseph H.
D.H.S, Mrs. Davis ahoivnd us Ihe pic
tures of the three generation* of the
lamented Jefferson Davis family, be
ginning with the pres dent and Mrs.
Davis, .Mrs. I lay.'*, the r eldest daugh
ter, and grandson, Jefferson Hayes
Davis. This was ii plcasng sight to
n Mlsslssippian, and one long lo be re-
uiomtiered. Mrs. Jefferson Dav's will
return in the fall to Beauvoir, but
alas! what a sad change she will <lnd
in Hie dear, Ksilmved home where sho
spent, with her unloved husband, tlm
Inst days of his declining years. The
storm of last October seems to have
burst In all Its fury upon this sacred
spot, changing Its »{pea ranee to that
of dilapidation and, I might udd, des
olation. The lordly live oaks which
wore .Mr. Davis’ pride, and beneath
whose tranquil shades be spent so
many dreamy ho ire, wrecked by ibis
fateful storm, tt ,w form ,i i mg'ed muss
across the road and al . ig the bench
of Beauvoir. The fences, too, are de
stroyed; lu fact, the frout yard was
torn asunder and a part was swept
Into a great carnival of ruin, nml now
only a temporary fence of two rotten
planks and two barbed w.res tacked to
P’no poles enclose this historic home.
Tile road Is forty feet nearer the home,
that much of tlio front yard having
been taken for this purpose. The place
thus changed since Mrs. Davis last
saw If, will scarcely be recognised by
her mid .Miss Winnie. Wliat a pleasure
it would be to her friends If the noble
women of Mississippi, before Iter re
turn, would restore the old borne, as
marly as possible* to its former condi
tion. Will not some one take the load
In this noble enterprise? I.et Ihe pa
triotic ladies of the state teach the
men that tlielr love for Jefferson Da
vis, for Mrs. Davis and for Hie daugh
ter of Ilie Confederacy Is still fresh in
