Safina Paper Manufacturing Company,
wus out visiting his plant, and while
riding out In the country h|s attention
was caked to the Immense growth of
the sunflower. He wua nt ox*' Im
pressed'with the Idea that (he stalk,
if properly ttreoked, could be used In
miming paper. Following up ols "fool-
lain loot," os his fritiKW called It, he
proourca a Pantile of Mailt* and took
them to Chicago. Alter butting them
for several hours, ho arranged nt flat-
iron lu tils lap, and with a hammer
commenced reducing toe sulks to it
pulp, from which hu produced n sheet
of piper, and possibly the flntt pjper
over produced trom the sunflower ittalk.
About one oume turn the writer began
expenmuaurig with an tmprovwd
blcuch, and succeeded tn making tho
pulp a tight mutUllu, Aftter comparing
rcsulA with Mr. Ifinkcl, he determined
to make a test on a larger scale, Wlui
regular paper-making machinery, and

pounda or pulpt which produced about
