Proposition.
NEW OFFICERS WERE ELECTED
It la Prababla That Mr. Cbarleallarbat

Bronght to n,ar.
Even ten dUzens made up the at
tendance at the mu* meeting of mem-
bera and friend* or the Public Library,
held In the library parlor* laat night
for the purpose ot electing a new board
of d tree tore and to take ate pa to atop
the sale of the library today.
One of the gentlemen present re
marked that he could think of no more
nerloua reflection on the literary or pub
lic-spirited tendency of Macon than the
alee of last nbcht’n meeting.
Those staunch friend* of the library
present at the meeting laat night were:
Col. D. Q. Hughes. Emanuel Waxel-
bium. Robert Munford. Campbell King,
Capt. R. K. Park. Charles Herbal. T.
P. Lowrey. Col. Johnson. n«v. 8. 8.
Sweet ami Maj. T. O. Cheetney.
Although the attendance was small
the meeting did not lack Interest, for
those present went In determined tone*
Hided, and the fltwt thin* dlncusaed was
cornpllnh somethin*. Col. Hughes pre-
the present atntus of the library' af-*
fairs, and then, more directly, the debt
for which the book* of the library are
to be sold at Sheriff'* sale this morning
unices somethin* 1» done to slop the
wale. The debt amounts to *184 and la
due to Wilder*' Hone. It repreaents the
balance due for shelving and book
cAses furnished by the Wilder#, and in
cludes about MO attorney's fee*. The
original attorney* were Jone* & t>a»her,
but the claim 1* now held by Mr. Jone#
of the law firm of Estes & Jones.
•Tho meeting discussed the debt quit*
freely, and especially the debt for MO
lawyer's fee*, which seemed to be n
th',rn in the wide of the directors. Mr.
Waxelbaum held that the library did
not owe attorney's fees, and wald the
director* had offered to pay to* debt
lc*-* attorney's fees, but the Wilders
refuted to do this and hied brought the
library to wale.
OAPT. PARK TALKED PLAINLY.
This statement teemed to arouse Capt.
park. He aald bq presided at the meet-
tag which organ lied the library aa*ocl«-
IV ,n nineteen year# ago and ho haled to
ae» Die magnificent property forced to
aale. He thought It a Shame that the li
brary waa being forced In thiy manner,
and remarked that a great deal more
obloquy would rwt 05 tho mon w«pon»
wlble tor It than there men themaelvM
bad any Idea. TV. pud M plainly, he told
exactly what ought to be done with
any one who would force such an Insti
tution aa the Macon Public Library to
mlc. Tt mam an institution, he said,
which la a credit to the town and had
been as much benefit to the pubUe aa
any Institution In the town., _ .
other* present narced with Capt.
Park, but «uld their opinions wouldn't
step tbe sale to-day. It seemed that the
attorneys In char** were determined
to push the debt. Mr. Wsxelbaum said
lie told the attorney oh tho time the
levy was made that Col. Hughes, tho
president, waa alck In bed. and that
h* himself had to go away for a fow
day*, and bogged the lawyer not to
tanks tbe levy until Col. Hughe* got
■out or, at least, until they could mak*
come further nmioxement. Before he
returned, and while CcA. Hughe* waa
Still sick, the levy wata made.
OFFER NOTES IN PAYMENT.
It was Dion suggested by Mr. Waxel-
baum that tho library offer tho Wild
er* three of Lamar Clay's rout no'tes
for 110 each In payment of the debt.
Capt. IMrk put Lhto In the ahane of «
motion, and moved that Col. Hughe*,
Mat). Chcstuty and E. 8. Wsxelbaum
be appointed a committee to see WlUl-
cr'a Sons till* morn In* and make Much
a’ proporttlon. Till* was agreed to, and
the committee will oill on the cred-
ltora this morning und make this offer
to aettle the debt. If the olfer la hot
luvcpted, then nu attorney will be em-
