A Kindly Nephew Ys Bothered by the Old
Mun In a Htorr.
There ero soino old men living who have
not wen oil tbo sights of tho city. Now
snd then ono comes In who is a counter
part of JoRhua Whitcomb. Such a one
was hero last week. He has lived nearly
40 years not far from a Wisconsin town
which Is within two hours' ride of Chica
go. Ho has a nephew hero who took him
around for two day* and tho nephew is
enjoying himself relating sotno of tho an
tics of his Badger uncle.
"We took an elevator," said tho nephew,
"in ono of the retail dry goods houses,
and while tho man In chnrgo was waiting
for others to get In my uncle said to him:
'Hurry up now. If you're going to wait
for a load, we'll get out and walk.' Just
as tho car started ho said to the man:
‘Don't let go tho rope. I reckon I conkl
jump out and l>cnt it down, but I'd llko
to enjoy tho full rldo If It's tho samo to
you.' We reached tho third floor, and tbo
man called out: 'Third floor. Ladles’ cor
nels, underwoar, silk skirts, hosiery and
patterns.' 'Stop 'er,' called out my undo,
and turning to me bo said: 'Come on,
Jim. This Is whoro I want to land,’ nml
as wo wero leaving tho car ho said to tbo
t In charge: 'Jest hold your horses
hero for a few mlnutos till wo come hock.
Now, don't run away, 'cause I want to go
down to the roof when I get on again.’
‘ Wo wero soon In tho midst of tho
young salesladies of the department. My
unole, after looking about for a moment,
remarked In a perfectly honest way: ‘I
guoss you aro all orphans or wldders may
be, seeing that yon aro all dressed In block.
I guess tlin concern hero Is protty good to
glvo you jobs. I'm awfully sorry for tho
lot of you, and If you ever got away Sun
days and can como out to —— I’ll meet
you and tako you out to tbo farm and glvo
you tho best wo got. My olo woman
would bo powerful glad to havo you. Jim,
here, Is my nephew; lives hero In Chicago.
Reckon you all know Jim, hey, Jlmf*
The situation wnsemhamuihlng, and I
pulled him nway. The young women
wero blushing and laughing. As wo pass*
eil niif lie mw ono of those ugly Chinese
gods In tho tea department. Bcforo I
could stop iny undo ho bad hit the Idol In
tho fnoo with his slouch hat, klokod at it
and then said to mo: 'Say, Jim, if your
Auut Botsy had that out to tho farm,
sho'd uso it for a bco gum. I wonder
what they'll let It go fori’ I tugged at his
elbow until I got him away. Wo wero
then in sight of a descending elevator.
Ho broko from iny dutch, and making n
dash for the mr he railed bnek to me:
Como on, Jim. I’ll hold her till you get
abenrd,' and when I reached tho car ho
had a hold llko a vlso nn tho cable, while
the conductor was crowded hock In tho
corner. 'Keep hack, or I’ll brain you,’ my
undo was saying to tho conductor. 'I
know what I'm doing. Say, Jim, grab
tho ropo a mlnuto till 1 spit on my linnds,
and tlion I'll run her to tbo cellar.'
"By tho time ho released the rope. I had
him in tho cornor, where I hold him until
wo reached tho first floor. I got him out
of tho car and finally got him to his train,
and wlillo I enjoyed his antics I was tic
kled when I knew ho was gono, for I didn’t
know whllo ho was hero whnt mlnuto ho
would break away and causo mo trouble.
Ho Is ono of tho best old men that over
llvod, but llsblo to go off half cocked at
anything thnt Is novel. "—Chicago Herald.
Ho Who ltnns May Read,
"Compared to Europo every American
dty Is far behind tho times in tho matter
of lottoring tho streets," said Paul G.
Bushby, an American artist. 4 'Tako Paris,
for example. After countless experiments

mnrklng tho names of streets whoro stran
gers can rend an they run wns not on tho

metal plates attached to tho corners of
houses. These plates nro very largo, tho
Icttors aro half a foot or moro In length
and aro rnlsod. Thoso loiters nro palntod

When a man moves into another quarter
of tho dty, ho has only to go to tho near
est street corner and look at tlio sign to
find out In whut ward ho Is living. Signs
on lampposts nro all right in their way,
but tho lamps nro often broken, and a

A Fair Warning.
The man from a racing stable In tho
east had gono to the southwest to get a job
In a now* country. The first person bo
struok was tho hotel keeper, who mn a liv
ery stable in connection with his houso.
"Um-ra," hesitated the landlord, "I
don't know whether I can give you any
thing to do or not. You see," eying him
suspiciously, "I don't know you."
"Thnt doesn't make any difference,"
argued tho applicant. "I know all about
handling horses."
"That's what I want to know about,"
said the landlord.
"Well, I can show you mighty quick
that I can handle horsos any way any man
in this country can. l*vo got It down
fine."
Tho landlord looked him all over a jo-
fully.
"Mobbo you can and raebboyou can’t,"
ho said warnlugly, "but let mo tell you as
a friend to a stranger that there's ono way
of handlln host** down hero If wo catch
you at all tho rest you kuow about tho
business won't save you a minute.- That's
a tip you can bet on, and I’ll try you for a
week or two."—Detroit Free Press.
The EvU Eye.
Captain John G. Boutko, United States
army, In his study of customs and super
stitions of tho Rio Grande, tells of the be
ll of there In tho evil eye. A man who has
the "cchsdo el ojo" may b© rendered
harmless, so far as ho can affect a child.
If ho "HU his mouth with water and eject
It Into tho chiId’a mouth." In Mexico a
man, it Is believed, having the "ojo," or
evil eye, can injure a horse. Of course this
aupcrstltlon may have been distributed by
Latin races. Still "the evil ojo" must b«
of tho most rvtnoto antiquity. Captain
Bourke asks what is the meaning of the
following esniesalon In the Old Testa
ment, Provrrl** chapter xiill: ‘ Eat thou
not tho broad of him who has ths evil eye."
