THE MACON TELEGRAPH: SATURDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 1, 1394
A SIXJLUB LEAGUE.
Macon Almost Certain to Have !’re
cessional Baseball Next
Summer.

Notwithstanding that neatly everj-
bodjMa the aty Is eatiiusixl over foot
ball and talk tittle of any till og else,
Maj. Winter* and a few lovers of base
ball are preps nut,' to give Jlacou a line
article of rise gwuit national game dur
ing tibe coming summer. r .
The success that MuJ. Winters has
made of, eveeytlmig be has- pat his
mind, *to is it ssifflaeat guarantee tl^at
be will make a success of baseball the
coming .season If he goes Auto It, and
there Bio 6trong indications that he
will go Into It uod that, too, with nil
of the energy characteristic of him.
From a cmvvetu&tlon a reporter bud
with the major yesterday, it is learned
that tire swatlment of the meeting in
Atlanta tras strongly in favor of r,n In;
ter-saate league, Tennessee, Georgia
and South Carolina being the only
slates to be On such a league. The
cities to be represented are CSiattawto
ga in Tennessee, Ait&amta, Macon, Au
gusta and Savannah In Georgia, and
Charleston in South CaroMtu. If Au
gusta don’t want to go luto the league
Columbus would be taken in, as It Is
understood that that city is aits ouS
to enter. A six-dub league, composed
of the cities mentioned, with a salary
Emit mat exceeding $S00, oould bo
mhd© ito pay. Tit's was generally agreed
among those who attended the Atlanta
meeting, but if any attempt Is made
to form a Southern leugue taking In
New Orleans, Mobile nnd Memphis or
Nashville, or even Montgomery and
Birmingham, It is highly probable that
none of the cities that want to form
a six-club’ league would enter, as i: i3
generally conceded ithat .the long jumps
'to these cities last season was the prut-
oipal cause of the failure of the clubs
in the league .to make money.
With such a league us proposed Ma-
oon would have great advantage over
any other city in it, as she would be
right about the canter and could go to
QwttunotKa ■ or Charleston for about
half (the expdfflo necessary to take
cither o{ ti:/-.:-j. clubs to the other. Then,
bes'des/ If the salary limit Is held down
to ?SOO. and .good players can be had
for that, the salary expense would not
be near so great as last seuson.'
Mttcan' is a good ball' itomn-the best
in the South, regardless of size, and If
a dub is formed trader such business
piCndples as Maj. Winters would have
it formed, it would be as liberally, and
oven morel Iberally patronized than the
high-priced clubs of the past. Maj.
Winters knows enough about baseball
to know how to select players, and it is
believed flWat ho oould geit together and
conduct a winning team.
When the next moctojag of the league
taen 's hold all of these 'things /will lie
discussed, and 4t can almost be safely
mid 'that sudh a league util be formed,
and If formed Macon will surely be
in it.

Will you heed the warning—the eig.
mil, perhaps, of the sure approach of
that more terrible disease, ooneumtioh?

Xs the Earth Hollow?
Acoordlng to a queer belief In existence
among the Icelanders, all waters which
flow toward tho north are drawn thither-
waid by a suction created by tho oceans
tumbling downward through tho hollow
whloli, they firmly believe, penetrates our
globo from pole to pole. Their authority
for this curious belief is the “Utama
Saga," a scniisaered work, written early
iu the Fourteenth century.—6t Louis Re

The Left Over Fly.
Probably thero Is nothing bo exasperat
ing In tho world as a left over fly. It has
just energy enough to alight on your head
and not enough to jump off briskly, and
when he docs get off he Is right back again,
only half an inch away. People of an irri
table disposition have been known to
swear at a left over fly.—Boston Traveller,
