Not very long ago a young man arrived
from tho west about II p. rn. and prompt
ly botook himself to look up an old friend
whoso room hla own had adjoined In n
house on Forty-eighth street. Tho bouto
was closed up for tho night, so tho young
man took out hla erstwhile latchkey, and,
letting hlrnsclf In, mounted to bis chum’s
room. Ho was out, tho gas was lowered,
and without waiting to turn It up tho
traveler slrctehcd himself on tho sofa to
watt and In doing so fell asleep.
When ho woko, It was to And himself
faoo to taco with tho basilisk stare tit a
strango man and with n revolver.
Tho room had changed tenants, that
won pretty plain, but It wasn't equally
plain how he was to make clear that ho
was neither a burglar nor an assassin.
‘'If you'll laydown that thing,” he said
after a hurried explanation to tho man
with tho revolver, "I'M call up tho land
lady and prove my caso.”
With man and revolver In pursuit he
did And tho landlady's door, only to he
confronted by a strange woman, who Im
mediately went Into hysterics.
Then every other woman In the house
raised her voice In hysterics, and more men
with revolvers gathered In tho pneungoway,
until things began to look pretty bluo fox
the young man.
At lost tho Anal man, armed to tho
teeth, Joined tho honrdon, and as ho did so
tho poor oxolted traveler gave a cry of re
lief.
“Put down your flroorms, ” colled tho
last comer, "and stop your shrieks. You
wore looking for Dick, weren't you? He's
gono to Ktiroiie. Thu whole house hero
has changed hands. I'm tho only one of
tho old crowd left. Good Lord, It's well
I'm here! You'd have spent one night In
Jail, at least, If I’d not been.”
“There," shouted tho besieged man,
