FRENCH TRAFFIC IN HAIR.
Bevrn Thonmnd Workers In Parts En-
gagiiU In Buying mud Belling.
Paris la the center of tho lino manufac
ture of prepared human hair. Of course
tho reference hero Is to woman's hnlr, for
man's hair Is worthless for any Industrial
purpose. Aside from tho houses that man
ufacture exclusively for tho export trade,
the city muul'crn nl...ut 8,000 hairdressers
and 6,000 workmen, about half of whom
nroongaged In tho manufacture properly
JK> cnllod.
Tho hourco of supply of tho hair may bo
divided Into threo categories. Tho hair of
tho first category Is furnished by foreign
countries, India and China being tho lar
gest suppliers. Tho hair Is'exclusively
black and gray nnd comes In boxos, care
fully packed. In addition to theso coun
tries, Itniy, Spain, Germany and Russia
supply smell quantities. Tho hair from
India ond China undergoes quite an clnb-
orato preparation. Itlsflrstmatohcd, sort
ed and comhcd and then lintncrsod in a
scouring solution. Upon coming from this
bath it is united root cml to root end and
formed into locks that nro tied near the
roots. It yet remains to render tho hair
thin nnd floxlhlo and then to limncrso It
In a solution of soft soap and ohlornto of
potash to render It less brittle. Lastly n
definite color nnd shndo are given It. A
blond shado Is obtained with oxygenated
water or a’aaturntcd solution of carbonato
of potash. To dyo It black It Is boiled for
a few hours to a bath prepared with a de
coction of nutgnllo or cnropenchy wood,
In which sulphntoof iron Is dissolved, and
Into which a lit tin sumac Is put, In order
to give It n luster and reinovo tho bluish
tint pccullnr to tho hair of tho dead.
Finally it Is blcncbod by Immersing it In
several baths of oxygenated water to
which n few drops of ammonia havo been
added. Thus prepared, the Chlncso or Hin
doo hair Is sold to tho hnlrdreisers, who
work ft to their fancy nnd afterward sell
It nt more or less moderate prices.
The finest hair, forming tho second cate
gory, la that of Franco and comprises a
variety of shades exceeding 100. Tho most
beautiful la furnished by Limousin, Brit
tany, Normnmly nnd Bcaucc. Some lota
are derived from young ladles' boarding
schools and from convents. All jthls is
collected by traveling men called cutters,
who make their circuit toward spring and
visit tho villages to gather their crop. In
tomo localities of Brittany and Auvergne,
on certain market days, tho damsels who
deslro to soil their head of hair get upon a
cask, undo thelf hnlr and allow it to fall
over thulr shoulders. An auction soon bo-
gins, nnd every lot, ns soon Os cut, Is de
livered to tho highest bidder for spot cash.
'This product does not pass into tho bath,
but Is simply combed, and then scoured
with buckwheat flour.
Finally tho third category comprises
hair (which, it must bo confessed, la
classed among tho most esteemed) derived
from tho sorting of combings collected by
ragpickers, who stuff It Into lings Just as
they find It, soiled by dust, felted by wa
ter and odhoring to tho sweepings of
houses, nnd sell It to small manufacturers,
who uudertako to utllixo It.—Annales In

A STUDY IN HANDKERCHIEFS.
Their Pm Began In Venire Only » Little
More Than Three Hundred Venn Ago.
An Interesting historical study on tiio
pocket handkerchief hasappenrod In a Gor
man magaslno. It appears that mankind
is Indebted to Italy for tho Introduction of
that modest but Indispensable accessory
to civilisation. According to tho writor,
the Ufcoof tho pocket handkerchief was
unknown In society until tho first half of
tho sixteenth century.
-About tho year 1510 an unknown Veno-
tlon lady first conceived tho happy Idea of
carrying a‘*faxxolctto," und It was not
long before her example was widely fol
lowed throughout Italy. Tho handkerchief
then crossed tho Alps Into France, where
Its use was Immediately adopted hy tho
lords and ladles of Henry ll's court.
Tho handkerehlcf of that period was an
article of tho greatest luxury. It was
made of tho most costly fabrics and .was
ornamented with tho rarest embroideries.
In tho reign of Henry HI It began to bo
perfumed and received the name of “mou-
cholr do Venus." It was not until 1580
that tho handkerchief made Its way into
Germany, and then Its um> was long con
fined to princes and persons of great
wealth. It was made the object of sump
tuary laws, and an edict published at
Dresden In 1505 forbade its use by tho
people at large. .
idowly, but surely, however, tho vulgar
isation of tho pocket handkerchief has
been accomplished, and today even tho
humblest Is superior In one important re
spect to Petrarch nnd Laura, Dant* and
Beatrice, who, It Is somewhat painful to
think, lived inn prehaudkerchlcf age.—
