with toe umbrella, but ait last Ida saw
her opportunity und made a pass at
Chancy's neck with the knife. In an
other Instant tho blood spurted from it
gaping wound four inches long and
one deep. Chaney hupg her head on
one side nnd continued to do effective
work With the umbrella, but Ida liked
tlio look* of the gush on the right

decided to put the saino ornament on

and came around to the Jaw bunt,
when it turned and cut across the

Lee Grace, who had seen the crowd

Ida decided to make .herself scarce by
running. The officer gave chase but
could not overtake her. Gordon, the

however, and after chasing her down

Both women were carried to the po

40 YEARS THE STANDARD,
Interesting Sermon by Rev. J. C. Solo
mon Yesterday.
At the South Macon Baptist church
Rev. J. C. Solomon gave his congrega
tion a very beautiful and practical ser
mon uipon the subject of faith, showing
how essential It was In every walk and
avocation of life, and especially to the
full development of & pure Christian
character, talcing as his text: “Stand
fast In the faith.”—L Corinthians, xvtrlJ.
He spoke of it In its relation to tem
poral as well as to spiritual aftatrashow-
lng th-.it It Is essential to all relations of
one individual with another, to the foun
dation of national and international com
merce, to the advancement of civilization,
peace and prosperity.
The weakness of human nature, and
esr^'lally In times of adversity, causes a
nun to lose faith nnd confidence in him
self; perhaps by some misfortune his
confidence Is destroyed In his fellow-
man, and often protracted misfortunes
cause him to unjustly mistrust the al
mighty power, \fh!ch should not be done
for a moment under any consMeratton.be.
cause God will use everything for hts
honor and the good of his children.
And again, for an Individual to honor
God as he should, he must have and ex
ercise great faith, faith that will so In
fluence his dally life and walk that every
action, every word and deed: will speak
for that which Is high and noble, for that
which Is pure and Christ-like.
Faith In another aU-lrcportaat way, to
the most potent factor for reaching a
sin-sick soul, leading him from darkness
to light, where lie may exercise all ener
gies for the promotion of God’s cause
and the uplifting of the world.
But faith can be seen In two classes,
one as a strong and mighty power, while
the other a weak factor that rather pro
duces weakness than strength.
The latter Is the faltering faith that
Is too orten used by professed followers
of Christ.
Nothing can so elevato, strengthen and
dispel doubts and fears as that true and
abiding faith thut should distinguish ev
ery Christian from the woridHan.
God often tries the faith of his servants
In order to strengthen them. It may seem
hard and dlfflclll to us, as wo do not un
derstand his motives, but It Is for our
welfare, and the most glorious thought
of It all Is that God will regard and re
ward all of the true and living faith we
oxerclse In him.
