THE MACON TELEGRAPH: MONDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 10, 1894. . THU' BAD COLLEGE BOYS. {The Old Gentleman, Too, Was a. Little Wayward. , , \ ; Athens, Dec. 9.—(Special.)—The following: poem- appeared In the Banner this morn ing and shows that boys were boys even •when papa wu3 one: Those who havo read Mr. A. L. Hull’s sketch of the university will appreciate the following poem descriptive of the riot of 1832. This production was picked up by Professor Ward In one of the dormito ries and the copy here given was found among his papers, wlch he bequeathed to Mr. Wlllfcam.N. White of this city; Students, prepare yourselves to hear the recent college nows, Of freedom and of students’ rights as serted by the blues. On 'Wednesday night they sailed forth wltli sticks and rocks In band. Had an officer shown hlmsuf that night he would have shure been fanned. Did Capt. Hell 'and his legion of fiends and fiery devils He waved his sceptre o’er their heads and bade them to the revels, As quick as -thought his words were heard and sunk deep in their bouIs. The^r swore they’d root old Hop out from his hiding liells and holes, With desperate shouts thus on. they charged around with hickory sticks. Freedom they cry, and then let fly <a vol ley of rocks and bricks, Whaug, bang, batter whang, the like you ne’er did see. Heh! says old Hop, I believe they have a hankering after me. ■* Down on the floor he throws himself and -v .under the bed away, 'As pale as death, as scared na —, has nary word to say. IThen from thence they scamper fortl* to tother and away, With sticks In hand they charge the door and hold old * Word at bay, i • * ‘Against the door they rush. Eh! eh! eb! he grunts. At length ho cries “Oh. Lord, I'm scared to death for once.'* '•Enough for him,” the captain says. The soldiers then desist, • . . lAnd down the steps they rush headlong to give old Jack a twist, .Their flowing robes behind them stream as white as finest linen; To have seen them, I declare, would have set the gals to grlnnln*. But baric 1 . “I think I see a spy watching ' us,” says one. They marked him well; he proved to be Joseph Hutchinson. . I / ''On,” says one, ”we’ll charge on him and put him to the rout.” As soon, though as the word was given he quick turned about And fled to find protection In the house of Major Jack. Hurley hurley, topsy turvey, he put the house in rack. The major with ragb and anger mixed got so very hot He said to them, ”If you throw In here | I’ll take and give you a shot.” They charged about the street awhile and back to college come. The brickbats In the passage sounded like a beating drum. At length they all retired to bed without a thought in mind That a member of the faculty their names e’er out could find. But yet alas! the truth I’ll tell for shure It is well known, Did Hop out of his door did slip and run afoul of one By help of civil authority from him they found out all. A mod,i, low-lived act In them cannot be doubted at all. But let us not despair at this nor t.'ve our hopes all up. For a of a barking can be made by a little pup, Let us rally around the flag of liberty and students' rights Ami if we can no other way, we’ll take it out In fights. [Rebellion, yes rebellion cry, proclaim it far and wide. .The first mnn who proclaims It, too, will find more at his aide, Miseram pacem, vel hollo bene nrat-avi. —Hell Slngecat. • Repeated trials show that a single teaspoonful of Dr. Price’s Baking Pow der Will go further than two or more teaspoonfuls of any other. , TALKATIVE ATHENS. , Athens, Dec. 9.—(Special.)—Manager Oowauy of tihe Athens tpflepWone ex change mSA yesteiilny that the Vo.ng- dtetumce telephone had already proved Haelf a success.
