8 THE MACON TELEGRAPH: MONDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 10, 1894 f THE TO YORK FASHIONS. Some of the Wonderful Evening Toilets That Are Worn at tho Theatre. SOME LOVELY COSTUMES DE8CRIUED Thr«* Of all net Xjrlea of Cora* !• In Vogm • _Dark Velvet for Oow»x«r*—Th« FaihloitabU tlllri — Uteit .VoTelllei In Neckweir, ' It would almost seem at ir the loaders rf /aiihlon In New York have established nn unwritten Jaw that their new evening toilet* l>e flint- shown to envious eye* at tho opera, and now that tho season is In lull swing wo aro all eyes to nolo tho won- rVENUVO AND NKW BLOtTBE COSTUMES. dors In evening gowna. It would bo quite impossible to glvo detailed descriptions of tho note bio gowns, but tho general idea left In tho mind ufter tho opera J* over la that thorn aro three distinct stylo* in tho mnko of oontiigofl. Ono la where tho buck In cut very Jow nnd to n point and tho front draped ncroas ioHomotblngof a fichu plmpo and coming up to tho top of tho shoulders. This lanllko becoming to youth and old ago, where old ago decides upon a low cut gown, nnd soiso think loo many of them do decide upon them. Thrro is another distinct stylo, and that is tho half low nook. None but thoso with vory perfect nock dares to wear thorn. Tho extremely low bodloo provalla and la cut os low on tho bust n» possihlo ami on tho ihoulderti, so ns to show thorn with their rounded outline to tbo beat advantage. Tho sleeve* two in n few entirely lacking, tltfdr plncua Mug filled by berthna of Inco or chiffon, hold up by Jowols, flowers or hpnngled trimming. Homo cf tho light bluo, gree n, pink or white gowna of silk, «atl(i or other evonlng material had very dark or black vclvot dog cars sot hero and there, but tho contrast was too marked to 1h) in really good taste. Light laoos, chif fon, tull® and flower* mnko letter comple ments to each other. Tho now blouse waist was neea in sev* crol instances where tho corsago was low, but square. Tho full effect wan wrought by tho overhanging plaits. Ono hniulsoma gown was of raalse wit In duchess, draped Homowhot over tho hips, and thoro wore two panels on tho skirt filled in with laoo and hooded by a violet volvot bow. The corsage was pointed and cub low both baok and front in a V shapo. Tho violet vclvot vraa drawn down to tho front In a point in brctelles and ended under dog ears of tho umo. Tho V was filled In with' lace and u vclvot bow. Tho uloovos wore full puffs of innixo chiffon. Dowagor la a naino that we rarely use ®n this country in connection with tho eld* c rly Indies of n family, but It was heard frequently at the opera in connection with tho nunilteni of ladles in black nnd dark volvnfc. Ono or two youngish ones wore. It, too, and It sets otf youthful fniniess veil, hut It Is really tho perquisite of ago. DDlnck velvet against a white neck nml Iwire idiuuUlcrs Is a rocomjionso for ago. Add diamond* to vclvot, and fading charms suoed no ono’s pity. Boms of tho corsages to evening drosses are bound around tho nook with aabln; others nru nearly if notqulto oovorod with wch Irldosoent ]iassomenterlo; others lmve fringes of gold bullion, exactly like mili tary fringe; auino have Mrings of jingling sequins thaft have boon A red In some way to product several changing colors. I no tice'll ono Indy who had a blue satin cor- Hugo that was slmpcd exactly ltko a corset. There were no alcoves whoever, but a drapery of blue chiffonBtnrtod from points front nnd hack at tho wubit lino nnd sepa rated over tho bust nnd fastenod on tho shoulders with hluo bowa. Naturally tho cldffou drapery was very amply folded to snake such a Itodlco possible. . To a) most all of thoso bodices there were full and generally quite plain skirts, with rarely any kind of trimming, but vory many had drawn draping across ths front, nnd moiuo few were lifted over an under skirt of some contrasting material and fre quently color. Trained dresses were fow and far between, ©von the elderly Indies contenting tlveim*dvv* With skirts lust touching tho floor in tho lack. I should say that thoso skirts with trimming did not look ns rloh nnd elegant as tbo«o with out. There was quite a oonuldornblo show of Vandyke points In lsoo and passementerie nnd ribbon wherever it could bo bestoyred. 4'hiffon, silk, muslin, tulle and laoo wore •U lavishly employed ns berthas, draping* and for slouvea. There seems to bo a division of opinion about silk for this season. Uresgraln is called tho fashionable silk, but I see dos- ens of ladles who are called leader* of New York styles, and they wear nrmure, faille, aniln, moire, figured and brooaded silks and satins, reppod and others having XOYKLYltt U* FAftMOKARUK KKIVKMt. tomvihlag of all these weaves combined. The most of these gowna ore imported di rect from Ikrk so that it seems to ms that all the*- silks are lu ths fashion. Be- t ides tires# there are thick rtbl*d velvets and plain velvet. There certainly Is no lack of choice. The celebrated peau do soles have a softs leathery appearance and ere very rteh and will take any kind of trimming, which some of the other silks WlU not. I 1 muonibar noting a very fins dress In an up town houwt here a few days Nines of rich cresui colored paau do sole. Ths skirt wm* laid In J«*p idolts all around, and there was no trimming on the skirt, ex cept a autof yoke made of ruby or currant red velvet, over Which one plait extended tbo waist. _ Thsrsjvas t_s|lff girdhayf tho same velvet Tho* whist'was fn the Kumdan blouse stylo and had a pointed yoke of tho velvet nnd n dog collar of tho Name. The sleevea WST8 Ct tbt silk as to tho puff, and tho forearm port was of vel vet, with sprung cuffs. This gown was mode for a brldo for afternoon reoeptlon and woe very handsome. This sarnrj young bride, who, though born here, comes by Inheritance into the possession of French taste in dress, had a mantle brought over in her woddlng out fit. This mantle Is of black velvet nnd pplnach green peau do solo. There is a sort of yoke In t!»«> book, to which the velvet Sk plaited, and these plaits aro held In to fit tho Aguro slightly as far ns tho waist. Tho fronts hung smooth from neck to tho knees nnd uro llnlhlxd off with chenille and silken fringe, headed with a very narrow silk embroidery. Down tho oenter of these there aro two plaits of tho silk laid on per fectly smooth. There la a capo collar of embroidered velvet, and a high collar hav ing a windmill Ixnv of velvet In front. Tho most striking peculiarity of this mantlo is the ample alcove, which Is mndo of ono width of silk folded up nnd plaltod In, leaving it in shape of a sling slocvo. Thera bows defining tho opening. These sleeves afford little protection to tho arms and vendor a largo muff necessary, and muffs are mado this season to accommo date nil fancies, foraomo are scarcely largo enough for tho hands, and others will tako in tho wrists nearly to tbo olbows. u You pay yoar money, and you tako your choice.” While speaking of this mantlo I may mention that I saw a tea jacket of white cashmere and mordoro velutlna mode on tho umo lines, flow very pretty it was I leavomy lady readers to Imagine, tho only difference there was Mug mat instead of the two folds of silk down tho front there was a bow with long ends of mordoro moire rlhhoo. Mordoro means dead gold and is tho namo of a color that is worm brown in somo lights and dull gold In others, nnd there aro few colors so adaptable for trim mings ns this is. It seems to bleml with everything nnd is beautiful in Itself. At night it looks Jiko a rloh garnet. It may bo found in wools, silks, mixtures and vel vets. Tho vclvot Is guuorally employed ns trimming, though it la eamotimes mado up in entire costumes. In such cases It floods a trimming to tone It down, nnd nothing is hotter for that purposo than fur. Laoo conies next, but any kind of trim ming should be usod with a sparing hand. A few months ago everybody wore nn increyahlo scarf tied In an enormous knot under tho chin nnd loft to fall In flaring onds, edged with loco. Now that fancy Is quite forgotten, nnd no ono secs it more, but In Its pluco is » great number of ncclc trimmings, feud they aro each aud all bo- NECKWEAR, HALF HOSE, GLOVES, HANDKERCH’FS CANES, UMBRELLAS, SUSPENDERS, UNDERWEAR. Besides they aro easy to make, nnd there are fow Indies who cannot supply them selves with a variety of thoso dainty bits of beauty. Thoso stocks, ns thoy nro generally called, nro mndo Indiscriminately of any and everything. Indeed I know ono clover buly who ntmio a very fetching ono from a discarded nooktlo that had graced the stubby neck of hor lord nnd mastor a whole season. Hho washed nnd ironed it and draped It Into a stiff foundation and put a buckle in tho front. But few Indies are ex- jxrted to spoil' a horn to mnko a spoon. There nro so niany.scraps nnd hits of laoo nml silks, chiffon and silk musllu or small plooes of velvet lying about’ that would bo pretty mndo up in thoso stock collars that It would bo a pity to wnato time ripping up old tics. Tho first thing to do is to get tho measure of one's nock and the height of the collar, nnd out a foundation of hair cloth, buckram or wlgan, and cover this carefully with whtto silk or soft musllu, ami set two or threo small hooks and ©yes at tho back. Thou tbo material can be addud and sowed lu any way that suits the mskor, folds, gathers, a series of shirrs, puffs or rosettes or double wings standing out on ©ooh side, or the front may bo draped plainly along and tho w lmm put In tho back in auoh a manner ns to showllko a frame behind the nook. Homo are mndo of colored silk, crapes ami velvets, black velvet particularly, nnd uthors are of silk ntuidin, laoo tulle, net and ohlffon. Some again ore combina tions of two or more of these materials, nnd some have ribbon addl'd. Among the prettiest are some made of a suooession of full rosettes of Tom Thumb ribbon and of rosettes or cboux of ohlffon or fine lace. Ono very dainty faucy had a neckband of pale blue moire ribbon, with a chou of bluo chiffon on each side. There are threo lapa of lace, each ending undor a chiffon chou, to fasten down on tho busk Anoth er very dressy Uttle affair was. a vest of pink chiffon, with a belt and neckband of tho some color in grosgratn ribbon. On #aoh side at neck and waist wore ohoux of chiffon ofid down oaoh side a double jabot of lace. These may appear small matters to some persons, who care Uttle about triflea, but they aro just the things that make the dif ference between perfect dowsing and dow- dlnees. The lady who takes the time to moke for herself a few oS these stocks nnd veet fronts may have a pleasing variety ot toilets at a small cook A new jabot or vest front, or one of these stocks with its sof tening draperies, will freshen up even on old costume go much that there will be found none to mnko Invidious remarks oa "that everlasting old gown.” Mm XtsaoY.
