{buildings against lightning. U Is a holy

announced with joyous blasts by tho

What Is certain Is that which Michelet
says of the swallow may bo applied to tho

Legend* go still further. They consider

JUST LIKE A MAN.
And It Cost Him » Seatsfclci Cloak to Patefe
t p a I’rsc*.
This Is tbo sad story of twoabsentmlnd-
ed men. One of them told It last night
with tears in his voice.
"Jcnnio Alien," ho said, "was ono of
my wife’s girlhood friends. Her father Is
a rich man who lives In central Illinois.
"When wc came brick to Chicago (olive,
my wife had not noon Mlsa Allen for throe
yearn. One day I went down to Mr. Al
len's home to bco him on business. After
wo had talked that over Mr. Allen asked
me If I knew that Mu dniighl* r was mar
ried. Naturally I was surprised.
" 'Jcnnio boa been married raoro than a
year,' she said, 'and sho Is living In Nor
mal Park, just outsido of Chicago, you
know. Tell your wifo to go out and call
on her.'
"I told him my wife would bo delighted
and came on back to Chicago. When I got
back homo that night, I told my wifo
about it, and aho smiled.
" ‘So Jcnnio Allen U married, 1b she?
Sho lives out at Normal Park, and I'm to
go out and call on her, am If Of course,
you brainy man, you did not remember to
get tbo prosent namo of tho Miss Allen
who was*'
"Well, I hadn’t thought of asking
whom Miss Allen married, and I wrote to
her father In a day or two, telling him
that my wife found his direction rather
Indefinite and asking him for further par
ticulars.
"His answer camo by return mall. 'It
Is cosy enough to find,' he Wrote. 'Thoir
house Is only two blocks from tho depot at
Normal Park, and everybody who lives
there can point it out. Uo tell your wifo
to call as soon as ahe can, for Jcnnio Is tiio
mother of a llttloboy, and sho Is simply
dying, sho writes mo, to seo her old
friend.’
"I took that letter homo and banded it
In triumph to my wifo. 'I guess that will
»cttloyour difficulties,' I ventured to ro-
mark.
"aho read it through In alienee. Then
a superior, pitying sort of smllo gathered
about her lips.
"Oh, Jennie's houso i ’ only two blocks
from tho depot, is It? Anybody can point
it out to met can they? AU I've got to do
la to go out thcro and ask tbo first xnau I
meet, Is It? Well, will you bo kind enough
to tell ino whoso house I am to nsk for
whon I get oil the train nt Normal Park?
tilmli I nsk for the houso of thuliusbnndof
Jcnnio Allen, or what shall I do?’
I called a messenger boy and sent this
telegram:
‘James Allen, Woodvlllo, Ills.: What
ls tho full namo and address of your
daughter's husband?'
One hour later the answer cairn;. I
finally suooeedrd in making ponco in the
family, but It took a sealskin cloak to do
it.*’—Chicago Mall.
Howells on Dante.
Again I say It is a great pity that criti
cism Is not honest about tho innstcrploces
of Utcraturo and docs not confess that they
aro not every moment masterly; that they
are often dull and tough and dry, ns Is
certainly tho caso with Dunto's, writes
William Dean Howells In Tho Ladles'
Homo Journal. Homo day perhaps wo
shall have this way nf stating literature,
and tho lover of It will not feci obliged to
choat himself into tbo belief thnt if ho Is
not always enjoying himself it is his own
fault. Af any into, I will permit niysclf
tho luxury of frankly saying that whllo I
had a deep sense of tho majesty ami gran
deur of Dnnto's design many points of its
execution Iwmi mo, and that tho inter-
mixture of small local facta and neighbor-
hood hlhtory In tho fabric of his lofty crea
tion is no parb of Its noblest effect. What
is marvelous in it is its expression of
llunto'spersonality, and loan never think
that his personalities onhanoo its greatness
us n work of art. 1 enjoyed thorn, how
ever, and I enjoyed them tho moro ns tho
ifipumorablu perspectives of Italian history
began to open all about mo. Then Indeed
I understood tho origins if I did not un
derstand tho ulna of Danto.
Hs Got Half the Fine.
A man who had been on a hunting trip
In tho fmvhta of northern Maine\ounhos
for tho entire truth of tho following story,
us ho bad it direct from tho sheriff:
A man who lives lu tho Mount Katah-
din region went Into tho ofllco of a juetico
of tlio pence and inquired about the pen
alty for hunting deer with dogs, and very
particularly us to whether ouo-half tho
flno did not go to tho informor.
Tho justlco consulted tho gamo laws

Vary well," said tho man. "I want to
complain of myBolf and sottlo."
Tho justloo could not book out, and so
gavo tho transgressor "a clean bill of
health" upon payment otono-half of tho
penalty.
It seems that tho man got wind of tho
fact (bat a game warden bad got tho
"drop" on him on hlsdeer poaohlngswith

tunity to arrest him; honto his shrowd bit

Street Gar Discipline.
Tho street car companies, like other
concerns employing largo numbers of men,
have n system of rewards nnd punishment
corresponding to those of tho schoolroom.
If a oouduotor keeps ids reoord clear, he is

however, after having been set forward SO
times, ho comes to tho barn n half minute
behind tho time fixed for taking out his

Mm off, and if this man is n half xnlnuto

After tho spcocjimaklng was over I ho
editor mot Mr. Depow in tho hotel ofilco
again, nnd thcro was a big crowd present.
"Wall, my frlond," Inquired tlio gonial
Chauncey, " wiiat did you think of my

Tlio editor hesitated a xnomont.
"Aro you," ho asked solemnly, "tho

"Certainly. Why not?"
"Aro you tho ono thnt all tlio nowspa*

speaker, tho greatest talker, tho ehnrpest
stumper and tho brightest wit before tho
public?" pursued tho editor.
"I guess I'm tho one," blushed tho gton-
