Here stood tho hturdy domicile, broad and square, built of bricks brought over from England in tho ships that camo for tobacco. It was flanked on cocb hand with offices and strung out to tho very edgo of the woods with outbuildings—kitchen, dairy, ice- houso, overseer's lodge and the "quarter" for tbo dusky colony of slaves. This latter might bo either a group of cabins or a single spaolous tenement of logs or stone, affording one big sitting room holow, floored with earth and rado dormitories, bunked nnd blanketed above. On tho ground floor tbo negroes loved to lie around thogrenj; hearth, with their fcot to the fire, and to sleep that Bleep of in- Bouclant beatitude which was brokon only by the fa in I Il» r cry of warning, "Some fool nlggor's heel a-buralngl" In tbo distance wns tho clumsy wind mill for the grinding of the maize which wns presently to And itself transformed nnd famous In coquetries of Johnny enko nnd pone, nnd flapjacks flattered with golden butter, and beyond, between tho willows by tbo crook, glimpsed and glanced tho rippling silver of tho bay, with its Bleepy coves and inlets dotted with canoes’ and barges, and with tho elondar spars of punglos In among the cuddling littlo Isles, where £nmbo tonged for "oyeshotors” in tho eon and, tho lorgorflshor took his finny treasures from tbo weir. Hero was a land flowing with mint ju leps and blooming with delectable dam- /• I*. Mlstrens Rebecca Lloyd, beautiful and gracious, grooted tho newcomer with a winsome courtesy on tho broad piazza, and tho grizzled butler, who hail “toted” Ills young missus around so long that thoro woro still times whon ho forgot him- Bclf nnd called her "honoy," brought you tho bogulling bovorago on a sliver salver engraved with tho family nruiB and was distressed if your straw refused to draw. That broad piazza was burnod, with tho rest of tho noble houso of Wye, on March 18, 1781, when a British marauding party looted tho plantation and tho mansion anil carried off plate, jewelry and watcfiea, swords, spurs, sashes and cooked bcavcip, muffs, turbans and tlppots, wigs and em broidered walstcoasts, plumed lints and cardinals, tho wholo splendid plunder of bravo nppnrol and dainty bedeckings. Tho gmnd old man or houso gnvo its body to tho flamos, but Its soul survives In the later mansion, whero its traditions of courtesy and kind ness nro piously cherished. Near tho site of tho historic doiuicile t a fragment of which still remains, stands tho beautiful structure, impressive by lts proud simplicity, which Invites tho way farer today In tho nanio of. eight genera tions of Maryland worthies who hnvo kept houso there since Edward I^oyd I, tho Puritan, in 1068, set up his son Philemon to bo lord of tho manor of Wyoand master of Wyo Houso—incunabula majorum. Tho uinln building of two lofty stories, includ ing tho ball, drawing room, parlor, din ing room and chambors, all of noblo pro portions, Is oonncctcd by corridors with ono storied wings, which aro tho library on ono eldo and tho domestio offices on tho other, presenting a pleasing facade of SOO feet, looking out upon tho lawn nnd tbo leafy nvon ie, nnd ovor tho wooda to Wyo river nnd tho bay. In Governor Lloyd's tlmo thero was a certain steward, or bailiff, at Wyo, ono Captain Anthony of £t. Michael's, at ono tlmo master of a bay craft In tbo scrvloo of tbo governor. This man wns tho owner pf a likely nogro boy who escaped from boud* age, and by his remarkable powers, ac quirements and address beenmo known to tbo world as Frederick Douglass. In 1881 Mr. Douglass, being thon marshal of tho District of Columbia, was moved to re visit tho Hoonos of his childhood and hila thrall, and ono day found himself on tho porch of Wyo Houso, whero ho was re ceived by tho sons of Colonel Lloyd, their father Mng absent, with that courtesy which Is extended to ©very stronger who finds his way thither. When ho had made known tho motlvo of his visit, ho was conducted ovor tho ostato, from spot to spot that ho remembered nnd desorojou with all their childish associations—hero a spring, thero a hedge, a tone, a jbeld, a tree. He called them by their names or recalled them by some slmpto incident, and oil the glowing heart of tho man seemed to go out to the place as he passed from ghost to ghost ns in a dream. And then a strange thing happened. Standing muto and musing for awhile, he said slow ly and low, as one who talks In his sleep, "Over in them woods was vrhar mo and Mars Dsn uceter trap rabbits." "Mars Dan" wns tho governor's son. Was it tho man's half playful, half pathetic sense of tho giotesque incongruity of tho situation^ or was it glamour—all tho tremendous sig nificance of a phenomenal 11 fo compacted into the homely reflection and phrase of a barefoot "darky!" The selections were from popu lar rather than dncaftoal compositions and wero very acceptable bj the audi ence, frequent encores being demanded. Master Purcell, the young violinist, is a charming little felXjw, and played remark ably weCl for one of hto years. His recitations were very good indeed. The singing of the lady quartette and the solo work of Mlswes Dyer and Pur cell wa£ delightful, and the instrument al rumbers of the veruatil? members of the club, who aeom equally masters of violin, mandolin, guitar and piopo. was uniformly excellent.
