One of the blRRev t cotton stealing •crapes ever known in this oeotloa came tight within the las; few days, but owing to tOie faat ithat none of the par- t!«s suspected of being connected With the s’^ganUc theft have been arrested, thin Telograph has refrained from say ing tutytfrluff about It. It smiiv that on November 29 a car cintaSnCfig twonty-flve bales of com- prtstiod cotton was Shipped from Mc Donough through Macon over the Southern for Brunswick, comrtjtned to t)w Mallory line. The cure was G. M. & G. No. 1059. and arrived at Brum?wick on 30‘th. The next thing heard from the car was whoa ttie iMallory line called for It and It could not be found, and the r.iilroad offlolals imm^lltutely sent out tiraevra to loco tD 1ih<* car. While 'the search for the air was «oinx «m, Mr. Babe Phillips of Kaai Macon learned that hl» cotton proas -near <Ms sicMng in Twiggs county had been rurnniig ut (MgUit, and -began an InveotVautlon. thluklng that some orij had been wealing his cotton and pi'tsslng tt on 2d0osn prr«« a k night. The six bales left at Mr. Prlco's warehouse were carried there at 0 o'clock In the morning, and the cheek for payment was made out to W. P. Phillips, who lives neur Mr. Bubo Phil* lips' place In Twiggs county, of which a man named John lloss Is overseer. Of course the cotton sold to the threo ware housemen was sold In the usual way and having been brought to town on Mr. Babe Phillips' wagons, tho warehouse men hnd no suspicion whatever that It was not all straight. After the cotton hnd boon sold by Mr. Price Mr. Babe Phillips, who by this time, was convlneeed that his proas hnd been used for pressing, and his 'wngons for hauling stolen cotton, called on Mr. Price nnd told him thero was something wrong about the cotton. Since the discovery of the theft the orig inal bagging on the cotton, which was marked 11. A. M. 8., has been found In Stone creek near Nelson's mill, where It hnd evidently been thrown by the par ties who repressed It. Old Man Jim Long, (be Noted Moon shiner, at Last in the Toils, UP BEFORE COMMISSIONER ERWIN The Old Geatlemsu Was Escorted to Macou by Gllcsrs of tho Ualtsd Slates Coart—Rod* In in a Band Wagon, The revenue officers have a last got old man Long, a noted moonshiner, 'who has on more occasions than onq, been bunted for In the swamps of Crawford county. Deputy Collector Greaves and Deputy United States Marshals Kelley and Thomas made the arrest Tuesday night, and a commitment hearing was given him before Commissioner Erwin yesterday. The old man was brought In with some show by the officers who drove from Macon to Crawford Tuesday afternon In a band wagon drawn by a spanking nalr of horses, and) early yesterday morning came Into town with a credita ble show of entcrlirlse on the part ot the now marshal’s office. The veteran moonshiner looks like n patriarch, with his gray hair and whis kers, and the long staff upon which he supports his bending form. He has not, however, lost any of that shrewdness that characterizes the moon shiner. When token before the commis sioner he pleaded sudden illness, and It seemed with the supremo effort that he bore up under the commissioner's ques tioning. Ho leaned heavily upon his staff and stroked meditatively hla long, flow ing beard, ns ho answered with more or less Indirectness the questions that were put to him. In the presence of the ro gation copper still, which was confiscated ut the time he was arrested, he en deavored to deny that ho knew anything a|jout the apparatus or how a still work ed/ After the testimony of the arresting parties tigd been taken, tho commissioner bound Long over. AN EVENTFUL CAREER. The moonshlnlng ncareer of old man Long, In ull probability, eclipses that of any revenue officer that has been up be fore the corrmilsuloncr In years. By a shrewdness and successive delusions, in which he has baftlcd all raids by the of ficers, he has gone on making his mean whisky and growing wealthy off of Its Illegal sate. A number of years ago, about 1W8, tho officers got onto the location of his still. Before they cohld get a posse together to raid it, the old man got wind cr their snovM.rienta and erpved hln equipments to a new spot. Aftor this, ha has been heard of through spotters, In different parta of Crawford county. It ts saki that ho was onco tried In the United States court here for some In fraction of the revenue law. A BAD CHARACTER. Long has always borno tho reputation of a bud man and a desperate One, T.'hen face to face with an alternative that concerned his mdonaiilnlng intercut, in the twunty yeurs or moro that ho 1s be lieved to have been In tho business, ho has sent repented warnings to the reve nue officers here. 8o when tho party who took him Tues day night, left Macon, It was with the full exportation of meeting trouble. They ntvordlugly went prepared with a stout wagon to hall their prisoner homo "buck- oil and gagged" If ho would not come moro peacefully. They arrived at the old man's house, a wanty away off from tho public highways, and far ilMtant from utty other habitation. Tho hotiso In which the old man and his seven daugh ters were sleeping, stood In tho midst of a large* clump of trees out in an untenant- ed field. It was abdut 10 o'clock at night when, by bright torch |lght, they made their long Journey through the dtamal roads to Long's house and rapped at the door. It axis opened by one of the girls. The officers apprised her of the Importance of on Intorvlow with Mr. Long, carefully withholding the professional purt of their mission. "Vo* kin wako him cf yo' like, he's in the back room, but 'twouldn't be mo that would do It. He's Jes like a bear when you wako him up." "Oh, well/' tho visitors rejolnod. "We will \vfc»rk that. Show us hfr room." In tho meantime four or five of tho other girls In the house had been aroused, and they Infested tho hallway In their Im maculate gowns, staring wild-eyed at the strangers with guns. It wus arranged that one of the deputies should go to tho old man's room and break the news to him, while the other two stood guard around tho TTouse. Accordingly ono of tho officers went In and shook the old man vigorously. "Mr. 1-ong. as a govern ment officer, I have a warrant for your arrest on tho chargo of unlawful 'still ing. Kindly come with me." "Yo liev, hov, ye;" the old man replied with astonishing nonchalance. ""Well, young man, ilro an! we'll talk about It dorrockly." T‘it- "t'u.■« r 'v;ix thoroughly chilled by tho long tramp through the cold, and sat down by a bod of hospitable coals that still smouldered In tho chimney aftor tho hist chunk of tho evening had been laid on. Tho old man's apparent good hu mor completely disarmed him of suspi cion, and he sat there little suspecting what was going on In the old moonshin er's mind. "Stop, you old fool," cried one of tho officers, who hod been on guard outside, ss he threw himself Into the doorway and upon tho quivering body of tho pris oner, as the latter, with upraised hand, waa about to clutch the throat of tho deputy who sat warming by the Are. Long had assumed a welcoming smile to tho intruder to make sure hla Anal re solve, and had not Interference come att tho crltcal moment tho deputy might have fared badly. Pistols were drawn Im mediately, but tho old man was soon made secure in tho wagon outside with out further violence than a little scuffle in which he waa too clearly outmatched to offer much reslatanco. The girls crowded around and almost spat Are .upon the officers. They raged and threatened until It became necessary to quiet them by shaking handcuffs In their faces. Tho tUll wu* found without much dif ficulty and destroyed along with about 100 gallons of beer. TllEOSOPHICAL LECTURE. ' Mr. Iwxsoa L.
