General Mile* has risen from tho hum-
blo position of lieutenant of volunteers to
ibo rank of major general of tbo regular
army, tho hlgliost rank nttalnablo In tho
United StntoH borvloo, and tho fact rtfleois
no small credit upon his nmlablo wlfo, for
tho reason that ho declares sho has boon
tho guiding star of his life, tho light that
has shown him tho way through tho dark
place*, tho Inspiration that ha* urged him
to push on through peril And privation
until victory perohod on his banners.
Gonoral Miles fought with conspicuous
gallantry throughout tho robolllon and
loft the service brovettod major gonoral of
▼ohmteort for his conduct through tho
Richmond campaign and for vnlunble
service at Roam’s Station. In 1806 ho ro*
cctvcd an appointment as colonel of tho
Fortieth Infantry In iho regular army, and
threo years later ho marrlod Miss Sher
man, a nlooo of Gonoral W. T. Sherman
Two children, a boy and a j.lrl, blessed
their union, and tho boy Is named Sher
man Miles. Ho is an ambitious lad of 11
years, and ho Is growing ns rapidly ns ho
can, *o that ho may ono d«y become a gal
lant koldlor ltko his grontunclo nnd his
father. During tho tvirly marrlod life of
tho couple Gonoral Miles was busily
gaged In lighting Indians throughout tho
west, and as Mrs. Miles kept as near him
as poMlblo during his various campaigns
against the hostile Sioux, Cheyennes, Kio-
vras, Apaches and Comnnches sho saw a
groat deal of tho horrors and privations of
frontier warfare. When sho marrlod
seldler, she made up her mind to share the
senior's life for better or for worse, and
what was good enough for her husband
was good enough for her also. No post
was cheerless enough to daunt her, and
•ho followed hi* fortune In tho roughest
part of tho country with the fortitude of a
borclno.
As Kleetrto Walking Stick.
A Frenchman has constructed an elco-
trlo walking stick of which tho knob con
tains a small electric lamp In a thick glasa
bulb, tho battery being two cells of a pe
culiar shape down tho cano itself. Tho
lamp gives sufficient light to read a news
paper in a train or to light oneself upstairs
at night.
