Negroes over tho River Will Have a
Feast This Christmas.
ft la an old custom among the ne-
Krocm who Mve n«tr the edge of town
to to die woodu every day a«.id pro
cure fuel for the uli-ni&bt lire*. It
doesn’t make any particular difference
with the averagt* uegro from whose
woods this fuel comes, provided it
burns lo suit. Over in the neighbor
hood of Kuan’s brickyard two negro
woman have been providing tho wood
and wafer for the family hi this way
during tho last several years. A few
dry* ago the mipply of meat waa very
low, but like the old woman’s famous
meal barrel, at the bottom a little was
alwuys feft. It seemed a ktad provi
dence that causid a racccoon to come
out of hla hiding place In the wood
and pace leisurely down the track in
frecu of the two women ns they were
out looking for wood recently, at a time
when food seemed utmost Impossible
to procure. And ua a negro and his dog
are Inseparable in hard times, the two
cum were along with the two women.
The dogs wero made to chase the coon,
which lmmedlut'iy took to a smal!
tree. When this was cut down the coon
found another within easy reach. The
women cut down *he second tree. By
this time the coon had slx^l up his
enemies, and didn’t seem to care
uhcuher ho run any further o«r not.
Both dogs Jumped on him with much
barking nnd. growlIpg,, but they were
glad to get off after much yelping and
howling. By tola time an army of ne
groes nsd surrounded the unoffending
coon, and soon slaughtered him. He
is bohfg cooked up for too Christman
ffsAWiUes.
Interest is nddod to the story of this
adventure with the coon by the fact
that ono of tho negro women claims to
havo bleu private chamber to Martin
Viutt J£11 ton. At the time of her resi
dence at the Wfilte House her uumo
wah Sophia Fair tax, but after her po
