8 THE MACON TELEGRAPH: SATURDAY MORNING. DECEMBER 22. 1894 & A NEW SWINDLE.Ik I recently bad occasion to travel from Liverpool to London by tho London and Northwestern railway. Z josfc missed the 4:10, having made up my mind to dine on the train, nnd bad to wait for the 6:80. I tv as pot in tho very sweetest of moods, as I had an appointment In London at 9 o'clock and had to wire and postpone it, added to tho fact that I had a very indiffer ent meal at tho hotel close by. When I took my scat In the 6:80, the only other occupant was a sedate, clerical looking Individual, but at Edge 11111 a third person entered tho compartment, evidently an American, or, to speak cor rectly, a citizen of the United States. IIo was of a loquacious disposition nnd rather disturbed mo by his repented remarks, ul timately addressed to me, as the sedate individual steadily and firmly repelled his endeavors to draw him Into conversation. I tried to choko him olT, but ho would not bo denied, so I closed my paper and an swered his numerous questions. Eventually we entered upon various dis cussions, embracing a variety of topics, which at length resolved itself Into a dis quisition upon tho social differences be tween tho American and English people, especially from a matrimonial point of viow. I laughingly quoted tho Brigham Young difficulty, flo took the matter up warmly and quoted Jlonry VIII and Ills “seven" wives. “Kxcuso me, air," I said. “He was bod enough, but bo only Indulged in six wives, nnd then only ono at a time, and that with the utmost difficulty." "Seven!" “No, only six." “You’ll excuse me, sir. I was at the bond of my school at Hartford in history, nnd wo Americans tako a littlo mom in terest in European history than you Brit ishers do in American history, nnd I’m poslttvo that Henry VIII had sevou wivcsl" “I assure you, sir," I replied, “he had only alx, nnd if you like 1 will name them. Catberlno of Aragon, Anno Bol- eyn”— “I don’t care a rod oontl You enn narao thorn if you like, but I’ll baok my memory nny dny. I say Henry VIII bnd seven wives. Look hero, you Britishers ore supposed to bo sporting fellows, nnd I’ll bet you what you like I am right.’’ “I bog your pardon, sir, I don’t want to take your money. I assuroyou I am right. Any schoolboy will toll you the samo." “I don’t care a dump for nny schoolboy, or for yon olthcr, for tho matter of that. I tell you I am right!" This remark rather nettled me, and I mnilo up iny mind I would give tho gen tleman a lesson. "Very good, sir," I remarked. "You are right" "Will you botf" ho asked. "I’ll lay you what you like. I’ll put my wholo pllo on iny memory, nnd this gentleman hero," pointing to tho sednto passenger in tho ccrnor, "shall hold tho stakes." "I bog your parJon," ho Interposed, •*jY>u really must excusoina It is against my prlnclplo to tako part in any gam bling transaction." "This ain’t n gambling transaction. I merely back my momory ngnimt this gon* tlcinan’s. Shall wo soy for n fiver!" I nodded assent, for tho fellow annoyed mo, nnd I was determined to pny him out. "Hero,” ho continued, "you tako this £6 note, if ho will glvo you another, and whichever of us is right will collar tho two." “I beg your pardon," remarked tho so- date gentleman, "I would rather notl" "Well, sir," I said to tho American, “If you insist, be It so. I trust, sir," 1 said, turning to tho gentleman in the corner, "yon will favor us by holding tho stakes!" "Verywoll," bo replied, with an amused •inllo. "If you wish it, I will do no." "Illglit you arc," said the Amorlonn and liandod him over a £5 note. I took ono from my caso and handed 1dm also. "Now, air, who is to docldo!" I asked. "Well, gontlemon," said tho stakehold er, "I think I can sottlo tho lunttor, ns, onrlousty enough, I happen to have nn Ksgllsli history In my vnllso. I am ii schoolmaster, und it hnpjicns to ho ray particular branch of education->ln fact, I myiKvlf could settlo tho point at onoe." • "No, no, "cried tho American. "I must ew It in print.” "Very good, vory good," Answered tho schoolmaster as ho opened his vallso nnd took from it a well tiiuinbed English his tory, and turning to tho page recording tho events of Henry VIII’s reign ho gave tho deolllori In my favor. Tho American’s fnco dropped, and I smiled. "Now, sir, perhaps you wilt not bo so positive In the future," I remarked, "and allow other people’s memories to l>o aa ac curate as your own." By tills tlmo tho train stopped at Rug by, nnd my two companions prepared to leave. "Well, gentlemen, as I have won, will you come and have a bottle with me!" I asked. "No, thank you, I don’t drink," replied tho eedato one. "I am not thirsty," ourtly answered the American, and they both disappeared In tho crowd. I did not oar* to have one myself, so set tled down in iny seat with a self satisfied Millie. Tho train was soon in motion again, and as we movod off 1 went to place the two £b note* In my case. Some thing about them attracted my attention, and upon closely examining them 1 found 1 had boon done. They had taken my good £8 note and given mo two bad ones. -—London Tlt-lllta. Ar.
