Chicago, Dea 27.—Whether hypno
tism as at present understood and prac
ticed 1» a power, on the whole, for good
ot for ovil is a mooted question, bat tho
fact remains that tbo pcoplo, tho press
and tbo medical profession aro giving
much more attention to it and its dis
cussion nowadays than ever before, and
tho general interest in tho subject is
greatly stimulated by snch claims as
that recently put forth by two girls of
Ean Claire, Win., that they hail been
pnt under bypnotio control against their
wishes by a doctor of their acquaint
ance.
There are some persons who havo not
even yet concluded to accept hypnotism
aa a fact. Very few of theso doubters,
bowovor, aro fonnd among doctors who
devote their time and attention to the
treatment of nervous diseases. In fact,
it would not be far from the troth to
say that nearly every practitioner of
note who makes a specialty of snch dis
orders calls in the aid of hypnotic sug
gestion in Ids practice. Besides there aro
in many cities men who make excellent
Incomes as hypnotists puro and simple,
their work being nmioly confined to ex
hibitions, healing treatments ami the
iustrnctlon of others in the art of hvp-
noty. A hypnotist of this city with
whom I talked recently said that ids
greatest concern was lest he should muko
an unwise selection of pupils.
“I recognize the fact,” he said, “that
hypnotism mny be mado on instrument
of nvil aa well as of good, and I never
take as pupils any wlio cannot bring
unimpeachable references. You see that
in the hands ot unscrupulous or igno
rant persons the power to hypnotizo
might bo very duugerous indeed to soci
ety. I need not mention nil tho ways in
widoh this dauger might exist, but I
know of several instances in which per
sons who lmvo only half learned tbo art
lmvo tmcceoded in putting a subject to
sleep all right, but Imro been utterly
unnblo to nwukcn him ngaiu. Ouo man,
originally of n rather weak mind, was
rendered permanently insane by such a
failnro on tho part of the hypnotizor,
and died inaunsylum iu Nebraska only
a few wcoltB ago.
“One day lately n yonng man oaliod
on mo here. Ho said lie lmd studied hyp
notism a littlo and for about a month
Imil boen traveling and giving exhibi
tions. lie took n susceptible subject
with him, of oourso, so that lie should
never be nt a loss for somo ono to hyp
notize, but was also in tbo habit ot se
lecting subjects from among his specta
tors.
“ ‘Ono night,' ho said, ‘I found snob
a subject who yielded very slowly—so
slowly, in fact, that I was afraid that
I should lmvo to give him up. At last,
however, ho drifted away, and I was
able to do wonders with him. When I
wanted to release him, however, it was
mint her matter. IIo wonld not ronso.
By tlio time I had spent ten minutes
trying to wnlto him I began to grow
frightened, nnd those in tho nndionco
must havo nnticod ns much. Finally a
friend of tho sleeping snhjoct rushed up
to tho platform, grabbed tho wntor pitch
er front tiie stand aurl dashed its con
tents into tho yonng man’s toco. Ho re
vived nt once and seemed uouo tho worso
for liis protracted trance, but I gave np
the profession ot hypnotism tlmt night ’
“Now, it is quite possible,” said tho
professor, when ho lmd finished this
story, "that this young man's subject
wns nn oxpert in the art of slmniming
and wns deceiving, though this is not
likely, and it is n fact thnt tho hypno
tist must understand thoroughly how to
remove tho spell os well os how to im-
poso it. Otherwise tho most embarrass
ing, not to say dangerous, results aro lia
ble to follow nt any time."

Runaway Stars*
There aro a certain class of stnrs
which Ay through space with a velocity
so enormous as to Imfllo every attempt
to account fnr them. They aro known
to tho investigators os "runaway stnrs”
and are no longer reckoned ns being
umoiig tho pliouomonn of extreme rar
ity. Ono of tiinso in the constellation of
the Ureat Boarkuown ns "Oroomhrldge,
1S80," long led the van of stollnr speed,
sweeping over at least 200 miles of
space each second. Professor Prlohnrd
Inn proved tlmt tho inconspicuous object
called Cassiopeia is a son 40 times more
luminous than our own, nnd thnt It is
traveling at the prodigious rato of 800
miles per nooond. Dr. Klkins has found
something more wonderful iu tho speed
lino in Arcturus, which ia jogging
aloag at 400 miles a second ns a steady
pace, hut having strmigo bursts of spaed,
during which time its velocity is in
creased by about one-fonrtb.
Rome ot theso runaways Ay along in
pain and ate therefore supposed to bo
cunuooted by somo invtsiblo "bond of
union." This presumption was first ad
vanced soma 88 years ago nnd ia oven
now being investigated by tho Isadora
