NEW YORK FASHIONS.
Just at tho present momont fashion la
almost In a statu of ebaos. Tho ball son- .......
son Is at Its height, and consequently ball i over the red skirt, being ralsod to tho flips
goods, or It may bo tbo genuine, Just as
one fancies Bolow tbls Is n rufllo of plain
embroidery. Tho stockings should be of
black silk, with slippers bnvlng red ro
settes. Thcro Is n draped muslin npron
gowns, wraps and ,dainty bead coverings
are shown with u lavishness that suggests
the close of tho season. The summer
S wns aro put before our eyes In bowildor-
g array, so that thoso who wish can get
tho flrst obolco, and tho spring woolons
nnd street gowns are coming forward rap
Idly. Thosprlng bonnet, fortunately, will
be n couple of -weeks later to give us a
breathing spell.
Among the prettiest of tho hoods for
evening I singled out n conplo. Ono was
made In the Mnrlo Stuart shape, of lino
Y BdODS roil OPERA, BALL AND CHURCH.
Over this was a surprising fluff of
on tho right sldo and left to fall on tho

rufllo' of whlto tulle. Thcro was a puffed
crown of the same, andwldo strings which
tlod In an onormoos bow under tho ohln.
On tho top thoro was n very fluffy pluk
ostrich foather, curled forward toward tho
point and showing In front. Tbls hood Is
so light that it wpuld not dlsnrrango tho
mast elaborate coiffure., Another head
oovorlng which wo can eenreoly namo was
of striped algerlan gnuzo, tho prevailing
tints boing ivory and pink. This was
mado of one long sash, with llnely fringed
ends. Tho t mlddlsof It, just onough to
cnolrclo tho face loosely, was turned back
nnd stltehod Into a closd plaiting. Tho two
edgos wore slightly rollod over tho fulled
edge of Inco four Inches deep. Tho upper
edgo was thus of tho rollod silk, and the
two falls of laco wero loft to float natural
ly. It closed under tho chin by having ono
end of tho scarf thrown loosely over tho
other snd had a small stickpin to held it
securely. Tho effect of tbls was oztremo-
ly graceful.
A very pretty fancy hood for n llttlo girl
for church or gran’d occasions was mado of
ruby volvot, plaited closely. Tho crown
wss also laid In knlfo plaits and than
bound around with a pink ribbon to hold
it In placa Thoro was a stiff and vory
full plaiting of pluk silk muslin under tho
volvct plaiting, about on Inch deeper and
much mnro full over the forehead. On the
top of tho crown was a wired plaiting of
tho silk muslin six inches high, with a
emallor ono bolow. Fink ribbons tlod tho
hood under tho chin. Tho combination of
oherry and pink, scarlet and pink and
ruby and pink is a now ono, and it has al
ready proved to bo vory taking for milli
nery and for evening garments.
Colors are more vivid- now than I oan
remember to havo over scon thorn, and
oven gowns for tbo streets aro very brll
llsnv I noticed on upper Fifth avonue
the other duy four street costumes of royal
purple, two of deep and vivid bluo nnd
ono of n row emerald greon. Thoso gowns
were Worn by thoso ladles who aro sup
posed to sot the fashion. They certainly
are beautiful aa bright bits of color against
tha uniform brownitono groundwork of
nil. Now York, but I think tho most refined
taste would suggest man neutral tints.
Thcro is so much velvet ODd velutlna
used tbls aeason-that nearly overy flvo
promennders will havo ono or tho other.
Smoko gray cordod velutlna Is a favorite,
and so nro the browns and greens, and of
these aro mado truly beautiful spring
suits. Some havo narrow fur trimmings,
some bare simply vlctorinos cf fur that
can be laid asldo os tho woathcr grows
wsrmcr In favor of Jsunty llttlo capes,
end some aro made with extrema simplic
ity. These tatter aro the most tasteful.
Mrs. Frank Lesllo, whose tosto In dress
is a proverb, bos a delicate shadoof bisque
brown corded velutlna for a handsome
spring costume, and It Is msde In tho
most exquisite manner. There Is scarcely
a suspicion of trimming upon It anywhere,
the richness of the material being shown
more perfectly by Its' studied plainness.
But bow very pretty she looks In ltl
Just now tho ball season rather Indi
cates that fancy dress will be called for for
tho latest and grandest balls. Thoso who
oater to all tbo wants known and un
dreamed of by womankind are Importing
fearful and wonderful tblbga from abroad
for the purpose. I saw 34 fancy dress cos
tumes last week, and from them I bnva
chosen three of the prettiest and most
' feasible. Any lady can make theso If she
has need of such gowns, and they ore not
expensivo wbllaoxtremely fetching.
Ono was an Alsatian peasant costume,
for the occasion, though I doubt If any
Alsatian woman would recognize It for
suth. Still It Is pretty. First thsro Isa
red cashmere pottlcoa»bordered with fancy
gilt galloon. This may be bought for tho
oscaslon.made af paper and stamped to rep
resent real galloon. It is pasted on the
High Grade Tobacco
ABSOLUTELY PURE
of pale blue stuff of any kind, bordered
with galloon nnd having n postlcbo stom
acher of whlto and gold braiding, The
eleevea oro of lnce, puffed ovor stiff mus
lin. Tho collar Is of embroidered muslin
lying out flat, being gathered only enough
to mnko it fit an tho shoulders. Tho dis
tinguishing mark Is tho great black alsn-
tlan bow porched on tho forehead. I saw
ono costume mado In this stylo where tho
material was silk and valvot and another
where tho basquo wns of blue enntan flan
nel turned lnsldo out nnd tho skirt of
turkey red calico. I think tho latter Was
tho prettier costumo, for It was more In
keoplng with tho probabilities.
Many a lady likes to hldo bor Identity
Hndcr n domino. Undor tbls eho con
wear n regular ovenlng gown and throw
asldo tho domino at “masks off." I saw a
very elaborate domino of dull blue surah,
with sling slcovcs lined with pink satla
Tho dfmilno apparently opened over n
malzo gown, but was really closed all tbo
way down. Thoro was gold braiding down
tho front, and a graduated flounco of mo-
talllo lace around tho bottom fastened at
Intervals with upright pink bows. Tho
hood wns out In ono square nnd brought
Into ehapo by Jabot plaits, tho edge being
bordered with fnnoy gilt braid. On tho
top thoro was n comical how with two
black empire plumos. With this was n-
black ernpo mask, ending with a frill of
lsoe. This snmo domino could bo mndo of
paper cambrto turned lnsldo out nnd left
unllned. More or less trimming could ho
used, according to tho taste of tho wonror,
but It should bo borne In mind that o
mask boll Is but for a fow hdurs and la
moro for omusomont and 'mystification
than for flue dressing; therefore a cheap
domloo is just ns good nnd quite ns pretty
os nn cxponilvo ono.
To'cut n domino ono needs no pattern,
ns It falls from the nook liken Mother
Hubbard, tbo upporpartof tho buck being
plaited. Nearly anybody can mnko sling
sleeves. If ono cannot, very wldo bishop
shoves will onswor.
A very pretty nnd becoming rcnalssanco
fancy dress enn bo made of palo pink or
bluo henrletta or nun’s Tolling or Indeod
any soft and pllablo stuff. Tha eklrt la
looped on each sldo to about six lnchos
bom tho floor by gathers held under moss
green velvet ribbon. Tho skirt Is bojdored
with gilt sequins, nnd thcro Is a frlngo of
tha samo nt tho wnlst nnd festoons on cnoh
side of tho skirt between tho two bnnds of
velvet ribbon. Tho ribbon Is ombroldorcd
with tinsel In pretty arabesques. Tho
girdle Is ornamented In tho samo way, and
so Is tho waist trimming. Tha waist Is
very pretty, opening os it does ovor a
white laco stomachor. Thoro Ih on Elisa-
bothan oollar of laco edged with tinsel and
a fancy crown wltb red velvet and threo
white plumes. This is n vory becoming
costumo, but tuy Impression is verystrong
that tho head whoroon that crown rested
would bo n very uneasy ono Indeed. Other
colors, particularly delicate tlnta with
whlto and gold, would be pretty for this
costumo. Individual testa should govern
tho selection of n fancy dress at all times.
let us say a few words about the gar
ments for our llttlo men and women, and
X wish to preface them by saying that oven
children. Perhaps this economy Is tho
sourco of their wealth. Anyway oliovlot,
cloth, sorgo, nnd, In short, nearly nil tho
materials worn by mothers nro now worn
by children, nnd wlmt with ploces left In
the making and good pleocs to he got out
of the back breadths n nloe llttlo frookenn
bo mado. Sometimes there la not enough
for slMves, and then velutlna offers a
handsomo and oompnratlvoly Inexpensive
combination, I saw n belzo colored diag
onal ohovlot book for a little girl, nnd
this wns mado out of two brendths of n
Inst fall’s skirt Tho neck wns gathered
ton rounding yoko nnd shirred at tho
waist to an Invisible bolt Around tha
bottom wee a row of moss oolored velvol
bordered on cnoh sldo wltb rod honing
bone. Tho samo color schemo Was followed
at the yoko und on tho caps to tho sleeves.
Tho dross was as pretty as could be. A
new ono oan, of course, bo mado In the
samo way.
I hardly daro suggest It, but n boy can
also In neatly dressed If his mother knows
bow to toko advantage of tho boat parta of
tho fathor’a loftoff garments. But If now
cloth la to ho purchased It would not bo
ronl economy to mnko hoys’ clothes, as
they nro told so chonply now. Still, If ono
has tho material, n protty ovorcoat for a
boy of 8 or 8 oan bo mado easily Uko the
design given. Whipcord, serge, doth,
lohovlot or even twood Is suitable. So
is corduroy or volvot.
For a girl of 12 a very protty modol wns
mndo of pinhead check gray and whlto.
Tho skirt was plain, but ncoortflon plait
ed. Tho waist wns accordion plaited to n
bolt of dark bluo volvot. Thn alcoves wore
plaited, bishop, with volvot oops and ouffs,
A neat Jaokot of light gray covert doth,
plnlnly studied, Is worn wltb It. By tho
way, theso jackets will ho tho general
fashion for aprlng. Tho book Is cut very
full. Somo are sprung and aomo laid In
flat plaltA
Among tho now spring woolens I notice
somo two tonod French novoltlos In small
figure designs. Tho colorings aro vory
ploaslng, tho most of thorn being In thudlt-
forent shsdos of navy, garnet, myrtle, re-
.soda, brown and smoko gray, Thoro nro
also somo very beautiful spring ohovlovs,
with two and throo thread tlnta, which,
mnko up Into suoh ladyltko gowns. Those 1
come In bluo, tans, brown, gray nnd green
mid red combinations. Tho best English
oovort cloths nro In tbo now spring shades
of mixed' browns, gray, modo and a mixed
bluo and gray. Tho bluo la called deotrlo.
Tbo principal colors for tho woolen suit
ings nro gray, In throo or four shades, tan,
modo and browns. Thoro aro a fow blsoult
and drabs. Sergos oro produced In now
shades of navy, garnot, myrtlo nnd all
shades of brown from tan to seal. French
henrlcttns aro ahown In nil thoso colors
and cornflower, roso, pearl, serpent and
drab. i Mate Leroy.
