THE MACOH TELEGRAPH: FRID-A F MORNING, DECEMBER 6,1895
on 1 It 1
Three Dnsaccesslol Attempts to Hold a
Special Meeting ol the City
Connell.
AHOTHER MEETING IS CALLED.
The Mayor Believe, In the Old Maxim, "If at
Tirst Ton Don’t Succeed, Try, Try
Again”—liked Only One
More.
The only thing that keeps Mayor
Horne from leaning on order for the ar
rest of flve of Macon's aldermen Is that
there Is no law that empowers him
to do so.
The mayor feels aggrieved and seven
of the twelve aldermen feel aggrieved,
dust what the feelings of the other five
aldermen are has not been learned.
Three times has the mayor Issued
a call for a special meeting of council
and each time the same seven aider-
men show up, but the other flve are
conspicuous by their absence and al
though they, or at least some of them,
have been pleaded with and begged to
come to the meetings, they won't do It.
Just why they won’t ie best known to
themselves.
Mayor Horne wants to get) an ordi
nance prescribing a penalty for street
tax delinquents passed by council In
time to make it effective for the pres
ent year, but so far he has been unable
to do ao. The mayor, however, don't
know what It Is to acknowledge defeat
and 1b governed by the old maxim, “If
at first you don't succeed, try. try,
again.' And he Intends to keep on try
ing until he either gets a quoram or
his term of office expires. *'I Intend
to call a meeting every two hours," he
said last night, "until I get a quorum.
The refusal of the aldermen to attend
the meetings Is an affront to those
who do attend, as well as to myself,"
he said.
The first call was made for a meeting
Wednesday night at 8 o’clock, but only
seven aldermen put In an appearance.
The meeting was declared off and an
other call waa made for yesterday at
noon. At the appointed hour the same
seven bobbed up serenely, but like at
the meeting the night eicfore, they fell
one short of a quorum. Somewhat dis
appointed, but not discouraged. Mayor
Horne called naother meeting for* last
night at 7 o'clock and almost promptly
on time the seven anounced ready for
business, but they could do nothing
without,*. quorum. The city detectives
were called In and given Instructions
to go to ihe homes of the absent aider-
men and it not there to go to the
Academy of Music, the clubs andl the
very other places where aldermen do
sometimes go and bring them up. In
the meantime the clerlt kept the tele
phone girl In a quiver making connec
tions In his efforts to reach the aider-
men by thfit means, but it was all to
no purpose, they couldn't be induced
to come out in the night air. The de-
teottves returned empty handed and
said they would rather undertake to
catch the man who killed the Chinamen
than find a Maoon alderman after
night. The mayor was very much ex
asperated over the failure to get
quorum and did not mince words in
expressing his opinion of the absentees.
The seven aldermen present said
"amen” whenever his language grew
strong enough to express their opin
ions. The result of the whole matter
was the meeting resolved itself into an
informal indignation) meeting and some
very choice compliments were paid
those aldermen who were not there.
Before the aldermen departed Mayor
Horne said he would call another
meeting for 8:30 this morning and If
no quorum could be had he would call
a meeting each two hours of tha day
• until he did get one.

A Legislative Committee to Visit the
Blind Academy Today.
A committee from the legislature
came down last -night for the purpose
of visiting the Blind Academy today.
The committee is stopping at the Ho
tel Lanier and will visit the institution
this morning at 10 o’clock. Professor
W lJiams, principal of the academy,
will escort the committee from the ho
tel to the Academy and the board of
trustees will join them at the Academy.
The legislative committee need have
no fear of not finding the Blind Acad
emy in even better condition than they
might ordinarily expect to find an in
stitution of Its kind as Professor Will
iams, who has grown gny In the ser
vice and who looks after the institution
with the care of a father for his child,
has kept it up to the high standard of
former years, which Is saj'ing all that
can be said.
The Blind Academy is a blessing to
the afflicted children of Georgia and
deserves utl the recognition the state
cun give it. .
MISS ADAMS SUFFERS.
Tho Victim of the Fire in Emit Macon
Is Not Resting Well.
Miss Adams, an account of whose
burning was reported in yesterday’s Tele
graph was not resting well last night.
It is feared that her injuries are serious.
She was severely burned before the
clothing was consumed, and while she
did not appear to be fatally injured, it
has since developed tlmt only the most
careful treatment can bring her through.
Annie Abbott, the little woman pos
sessed of a marvellous power, plays to
night at the A&tdemy of Music.
It Is two years since the people of
Macon have had an opportunity to wit
ness one of her performances, and she
has added so many wonderful things to
It that those who have aeon here lately
say it is even more marvellous than
ever.'
The sale of seats yesterday was good
and will begin briskly this morning.
By tonight no doubt seats in the lower
part of the house will be in demand
and the balcony will be well filled.
There is every evidence of a good
house and the certainty of a most en
joyable performance.
The College HIU Club gives a theatre
party tonight and has engaged two
rows. Another theatre party Is being
arranged so that the society end of
Macon will be largely represented.
Among the gentlemen who have
promised to be upon the stage and take
part in the performance as a commit
tee are Messrs. J. W. Cabanlss, Will
iam McEwen Johnson, Lewellyn P.
Hitlyer, J. W. W ills, W. H. Schatz-
num and Dra. Winchester and Camp
bell.
A glance at the list shows some of
the heaviest and strongest men in the
city, whose strength will be pitted
against the frail little woman. She says
that Mr. Schatzman cannot lift her
from the floor'and that she will lift a
chair with Messrs. Johnson. Htllyer.
Stetson, Dr. Winchester and half a
dozen other of the heaviest men in Ma
con on R.
She says that she will stand upon
scales and not weigh an ounce and give
the committee every chance to expose
or find out how her marvellous feats
are performed.
Lots of fun may be anticipated, as
some of the gentlemen are incredulous
and will do their best to disprove Mrs.
Abott’s claims.
The feats performed by Mrs. Abbott
are too numerous to mention. She has
travelled through 1 Europe and her work
has been closely watched by investigat
ing scientists and men of letters, and
one and all have been baffled. There is
not the slightest possibility for decep
tion or fraud. The performance Is gen
uine throughout.
Notwithstanding the fact that rto ex
pose has ever been made of Mrs. Ab
bott's power, one gentleman in Macon
proposes to make the full test tonight.
He says that he can prove that tho
feats can be performed by any one, and
some great amusement and interest
miy be looked for during hte perform
ance tonight.
In Mr. Clem Phillips’ window today
may be seen somo of the souvenirs
given to Mrs. Abbott by royalty in Eu
rope.
Mrs. Abbott should draw a large
house. She will make a statement from
the stage and to tho committee bearing
on the pretended expose- of her per
formanee given hy Nellie Bly In the
New York World, and will show plainly
the utter Impossibility of the claims
mide by the well-known writer.

HOW THEY RESPOND.
Seventy-Three Favorable Answers Re
ceived by Mayor Horne.
A few days ago Mayor Horne began to
send out a cirptriur addressed to the prop
erty owners of the city, unking for an
expression of their wishes concerning
street improvements. Four hundred
the circulars were sent out, tho last
bring sent Wednesday morning. The
question was asked: "Do you want tho
streets improved in front cf your prop
erty?”
Seventy-five answers had been received
by last night. Seventy-three answered
yes, one answered positively no, and a
third property owuer stated that he was
anxious for the improvements, but did
not feel able to pay for the curbing, as
required by the'ordinance.

READ THE DEATH ROLL
Which the Mils of mortality of any
large city may be fitly designated, and
you will find that renal and vesical
maladies, that Is to say, those that af
feet the kidneys and bladder, have a
remarkable prominence—we had almost
■aid—preponderance. Bright’s disease
and diabetes in the chronic stage are
rarely cured, and gravel, catarrh of the
bladder and enuresis, slay many. Yet
at the outset, wheirithe trouble merely
amounts to Inactivity of the organs In.
velved, the danger may be nullified by
that thorough renal tonic and diuretic,
