MACON, July W.-The <*otton mnrkft
Continues to run in a range of narrow
fluctuations. The dosing on Saturday at
noon Is practically the same as day be
fore. If wo compare with the week from
July 13. we Una July fcftfi August have
lost 11 and 15 points respectively, while
the fall months are off from 0 on Novem
ber to 14 on September. The pride de
clines one day, only to rally the next,
drought stimulating the bulls and reports
<*f rain aiding the bears.
Ao a subject of Interest we call your
attention to. the prices in two of th*
leaders, July In New Orleans 3 points
under New York. Ahgust in the former
market IS points higher than her rival,
while January reverses the position and
leads in New York SO odd points.
‘Another evidence of revolution is found
in the action of the freight agents of
various roads out of Mississippi and Ten
nessee to crossing of Ohio and Mississippi
rivers, who. in a late convention, declared
the sh'ppers have nothing to do with rout
ing the cotton, and the railroads will at
tend to that. This action would have
caused a row among old-time buyers,
how the new ones will take It, we know
not.
The government reports light to moder-
ats showers have occurred In portions of
nil cotton region districts, the only heavy
amounts reported being 2.18 Inches at New,
Orleans. 1.64 at Wilmington, and 1.72 at
Newborn, N. C.
In tho local market we saw a lot of
mixed cotton sold at 8%. Demand good,
offerings light.

NEW YORK. July 2D.-The cotton mt\
hot oi ened quiet and firm with prices
to 6 points higher on rather better cal»*'
than expected, a bullish review of the
week South by the Chronicle and unfa
vorable weather reports from the belt in
general. But as bull support cf a substan
tial sort was not In evidence, prices sagrd
ofT 4 points immediately after the cull.
August ■'easing off to 7.73. October <•&>,
nnd Jr.nuary to 7.72. Later there was a
rally on light outside buying and a with
drawal of early selling pressure. Business
was at no time heavy. Tho forecast for
• the Seuthwest promised clear weather till
Monday in Texas. Oklahoma and Indian
Territory. The regulation charts showed
dry weather today West of the South
Atlantic states.
Port receipts were fair, but not a factor.
The public continued to maintain an at
titude of Indifference.
The market closed barely steady, with
prices net 1 point higher to 1 point lower,
having cased off In the last ten minutes
under room liquidation.

YV. K. Small »V Co.'a Cotton Letter.
(By private wire to W. E. Small & Co.)
NEW ORLEANS. July 20.—The week
ore* with about the same uncertain feel
ing that characterized Its opening. True,
In nearly all sections of tho country cast
of tho Mississippi river refreshing rains,
have fallen, mitigating the bad effects
of long continued drougnt, but in that
portion of the belt west of the river,
or the greater part thereof, remains suf
fering from the "drought. From time to
time during the past ten days, the indica
tions for mtn have been fairly promising,
btit the pfomir* has passed off with only
sen tiered rains wholly inadequate to af
ford general Mlef. It la still .insisted
_ny widespread disaster. In the Mlasli-
-slppl Valley proper the crop Is spotted.
About 60 per cent. repre*entlng the early
cotton Is exceptionally good, and the other
40 per cent. Is late and of small growth,
depending materially on the character of
the fall ns to ultimate yield. In the At
lantic states doubtless improvement has
taken place since the first, and if good
rains would fall In the near future in the
Western belt, we would think the general
average would show In the next govern
ment report a higher condition than lost
month: without such relief, however,
speculation Is apt to re-enter the market
and higher prices result.
