The recent sale of the Sterling Cotton
Seed (,>il Company of this- city to tho
Southern Cotton Oil Company of New
York was one of . tjte largest transac
tions' ever conKummfrtod In Macoh.
The pric« paid was *125,000 'and the
property conveyed la one of the most
valuable in the. South.
The presence of this big enterprise
means much for Macon. Its pay roll
will bo one of the largest in Georgia.
Meosrji. A. & N. M. ' Block, who sold
tho big plant to the Southern Cotton
Oil Company, werq careful to guaran
tee Macon’s interests In the transaction
and to secure the best possible bene
fits to the city. The £lock brothers
had pitched this enterprise on a large
scale; their plaps contemplated the op
eration of tho largest oil millB In tho
South right here In -Macon, and when
they were asked to sell, one of the main
things they Insisted upon was that the
plant should be operated In the same
generou* manner which their plane
contemplated.
In the above transaction the Messrs.
Block have merely emphasized the fact
that they belong to the strong con
structive forces which are destined to
make Macon’s future. Their connec
tion with any enterprise means prog
ress for that concern and prestige for
the city. No young men are doing more
to magnify Macon abroad.

Jack George, Isaac Plttard and Torn
Dunwrlght, all colored, were arraign
ed before the recorder yesterday morn
ing on the charge of . stealing horse
shoes.
The evidence showed that George was
a drayman in the employ of Up? Dun
lap Hardware company. Pitt,ini 'was
a blacksmith, and Dunwrlght a por
ter for tho Dunlap company. The evi
dence further showed-that Dunw right,
would steal the hor«o*ahuef. f and giviv
them to George, who would carry th<»rn
on his dray to Plttard’s blacksmith
shop. Nearly two hundred<!'pairs oft
horse-shoe* were utolen in* thto manner
before they were caught up with. All
three of the men were bound Over to
tho city court on tho chhrge of lar
ceny.
The corner-stone of the void Jewish
synagogue was opened yesterday morn
ing after remaining In cement for twen
ty-nine years on the corner of Poplar
and Second streets, where thousands of
people have passed by It dally.
The stone Is made of Georgia gran
ite and weighs about 300 pounds.
laid in 1872 or In 5633’of the Jew
ish calendar.
It was tom away yesterday because
the material In tho old synagogue Is
to be used In. the new synagogue. On
the stone was engraved the following
names:
‘Building Committee—J. H, Hertz,
chairman; D. Abraham. V. Kalin, J.
Harris, E. Isaacs, Joseph Dannenberg,
D. Goldsmith, Samuel Lawrence, Grand
Master D. B.. Woodruff, architect; J. J.
.Coppell, builder.'V . 'V.
In the top of the stone was an aper
ture about the slzo of a brick, which
Contained a copper box. When the
stone was opened yesterday morning
and the copper box taken out it w
found to contuln about a dozen pieces
of money and many papers which
crumble like dust when touched, and
the writing on them was illegible.
The box contained a copy of The Tel
egraph and Messenger, tho paper being
printed at that time with a double
name. Among tho coins In the box
were two silver quarters dated 1854,
two American dimes dated 1853, a Mex
ican quarter on which tho date could
not be read; Spanish, French and many
other kinds of money were in tho box.
On the two bricks that covered tho
bo** were the following names In pen
cil writing: James Pinkney, Savannah,
and 13en Hunter., It Is thought by
some that those are the names of tho
brick layers who wore employed at that
time In luylng.the corner-stone. It Is
thought that they wrote their name9
on the bricks more for curiosity than
for anything else.
