THE BULL’S CONVICTION.
They think there Is a strong undertone
that will .iradually carry prices out to a
broader sea of speculation and Into
higher latitudes.
The bull navigators have taken an ob

The receipts during the next few weeks,
It Is argued by some, will give a man a
very good Idea of the crop. Estimates mu/

they think they will be bullish enough,

THE LOCAL MARKET.
MACON. Dec. 9.—Like the leaders, the
Macon market opened Arm at % advance,

refused the cotton at these figures.

NEW YORK. Dec. 9.-The cotton mar-
ket opened steady at an advance of 14
to 22 points, nnd during the first hour was
remarkably strong on enormous demand
from shorts, who were stampeded by n
bulge of 8 to D points In Liverpool. Bull
confidence was Intensified by rumors of

these figures being about the best of
the season. Heavy rains over most r/f the
belt, with snow In Memphis, coupled with
a forecast for very much colder tempera
tures In the South tonight, nddded to the
bullish feeling here. Wall street and
Western grain Interests sold out great
blocks of January and March on tho
uplift Towards midday the market went
.. few points, under room selling and
broke sharply after midday under largo
estimates for tomorrow’s New Orleans
end Houston receipts. January touched
8.18 and May 8.17 before fresh general
buying turned the scale and rallied the
market 8 points. Tho room played for a
reaction, but the second advance was so
rapid that very little cotton was picked
up to good advantage. It was seen thnt
the total port receipts for the day fell
manv thousand bales short of total port
clearances. Fall River news was very
favorable, nnd spinners wore reported bid
ding fieely for supplies throughout-the
South. Interior receipts for the day fell
10 000 bales short of those the same day
laat year. In the Inst -hour shorts were
very nervous nnd picked up • good deal of
of cotton sold by scalpers for profits,
nosed steady at a net advanco of 8 to
15 points.

3\V YORK. Dec. Liverpool ad
vanced sharply today on large American
. —---glued the advance
buying orders and maintained the adva
to the dose. Here the market opened
cit'd and different prices were paid all
over the ring, and during the first two
hours, the market vai a wl.d one with
enormous trading, one side realising on an
enormous scale while the other was bay
ing freely on the bureau estimate. Afte
the increase in animation in the market
today. The opening tales carried the stock
hack IV* to 65, and this proved the low
level of the day. but the demand dropped
off.at often as thq stock approached Bat-
day's level* although determined support
was always offered as it neared 65. The
behra became alarmed at the action of the
stock, but the laat hour rushed the price
up to 71 in their frantic bidding against
each other. Tho Anal price was but a
■hade lower. The support offered to Cop
per at the opening break prompted aup-
important stocks riling a fraction over
"aturday. .
With s rise In the call loan to 7 per
cent., however, speculators took fright
and unloaded stocks. Prices generally
touched the low point of the day on this
•lump, although Individual stocks were
forced down under subsequent attack, car
rying the whole market with them to
about the. low level several timet. Bt.
Paul was notably weak and fell 2% under
Saturday. Manhattan alao was vigorously
attacked and driven 2V* under Saturday.]
There was a good deal of calling m
loan*, but in seeking new accommoda
tions borrowers bid the rate up upon
themselves to a higher rate than was nee-
etaary. Judging' -from subsequent develop
ments. The ruling rates were 8 per cent,
or even per cent .nd tterelmmed
ample supply at that figure. The per
ception of this fact emerged about tha 1
tame time that Amalgamated Copper bl-
gan Its rally. From a genera! level of a
point or more below Saturday's prices,
the market began to move upward and
abroad resulted In some dlaappolnted sell
ing. Prices broke, rallied, broke again
and later studied up. Speculative condi
tions continue to be the leading charac
teristic of the trade. Foreign demand tno
Ignored In the geneml Interest of future
fluctuations. Nothwest rfcdpta were some
what smaller, but early estimates Indi
cated n large increase in the visible. The
amount afloat show a large decrease.
There was a nervous, excited market,
all the afternoon with a big advance at
the close.
Com—The trade In com was active* the
market showing some selling pressure and
broke % to Kd; and was nervous and
rather Irregular. Offerings were quits lib
eral. Cables were higher, but were of lit
tle Importance, except for the sympathy.
Receipt* were very good at Western cen
ters and the weather generally soft with
rain east of the Mississippi river against
the movement. Corn receipts were the
heaviest of the season. I.083.Q08 bushels,
nnd Kansas City received 362.000 bushels.
Prices weakened under general aelllng,
but rallied with wheat.
Provisions—Trade was fairly active with
the market very strong. Live hog re
ceipts were quite large, but Ih'c hogs were
generally higher In the prfnclpay markets
Provisions were steady all the session and
closed quiet. C. O. GRAY & CO.
