WASHINGTON, Jan. 25^-Thc fea-
're of the week In the senate will be
io continuation of the contest over the
statehood bill. The lines are now more
closely drawn than they ever have
been. They arc Indeed, so taut that all
onlookers realize that they are apt to
break before a great while; but few
unprejudiced persons would undertake
to say positively on which side the dls
aster must befall. The advocates of
statehood were much encouraged by
the vote of last week, and, contending
that It has been demonstrated that
there Is a majority of the senate favor-
bill, they declare that It Is
preposterous to ask them to yield,
while tho opposition urge that the vote
not n test at all and no real indl-
railon of t):o iiMliud- o! | hi*
They soy that the bill Is standing In
tho way of other legislation and con
tend that It must get out of thS road
and remain out when the appropriation
bills begin to press to the front, as they
will do soon. It Is probable, however,
that with some exceptional times the
bill will hold its place In the front ranks
during the week.
