local minister, and placed under arrest

locked up. but left In charge of a deputy

Ames communicated with formfcr United
States District Attorney Charles J. Ham-
blett of Nashua, and obtained his services

against extradition.
Dr. Ames has been here for several*
weeks, although his presence was not
known outside of the home of Rev. C. II.
Chapin, who received and sheltered him.
Mrs. Chapin is a sister of the woman
who accompanied Dr. Ames, and who Is
supposed to be his wife. Th# knowledge

Sheriff J. W. Dreger Is on his way to
New Hampshire with papers for the
return of ex-Mayor Ames. He Is ac
cused of offering bribes to county com
missioners In order to have his seerc-’
tary, T. R. Brown, elected sheriff to
succeed former Sheriff Megaarden, who
was removed by the governor for mal
feasance. and also of accepting mon^y
from dissolute women. There are four
of thesa Indictments. A .sixth charges
him with conspiracy.

McAlllstsr, a graduate of the t'nivsr-

years In the United States regular
army, waa arraigned before the board
of health yeeterday accused of having
exposed the pubito to contagion from
•mall-pox. It being claimed that he had
takeh hie wife, a small-pox victim,
from their boarding place.No. Mil Mas
ter street, to the Municipal hospital In
a trollev car. When he was told that
he would have to be quarantined at hts
boarding house, Dr. McAIUeter, who is
a small-pox nuise, broke Into tears and
said:
"Gentlemen, please don't be hard on
me. I used to be addicted to druns. and
my head la not yet quite clear. I have
lost 1150,000 and I have loet all of my
friends, hut I have got over the drug
habit now,and Pll never take any more.
I am struggling against thr craving. If
you don't let me go you'll drive me
back to drugs again. For God's sake
don't do that. I havo no one left to
care for mo except my dear wife. Let
me go. and I'll close out the little home
I have struggled to get together and
give up emal!-pox nurelng." •
