SILVER DISAPPEARING
AltD MONEY.
The inevitable drift throughout the !
•world is to a gold standard and It ha*
been so for a number of years. It is
*il!y. to Fay that thl* !« because of
*om« "crime against silver," or any de
sign agulnet the sliver mine owner#-, or
any political scheme In this or any other
country. It Is the orderly evolution of
business principle*, governed by bus
iness condition* and regutttdd by laws
of commerce and tradf. The Democratic
party made the mistake of standing in
the current, and attempting to dam It
up, but It could not be done. One
country after another in rapid succes
sion ha* gone to the gold standard.
Those remaining on the silver standard
are Mexico and a few little countries In
the East But they are falling In line
with tho more advanced thought on
this subject.
Writing from Bangkok, December 6,
1502, Vice Consul-Oenetal J. P. Selden
says that Flam has taken the initial
steps to place herself upon a gold basis
by closing the mint there to the free
coinage of silver. The tlcnl, the stand
ard coin of the realm, had up to that
time a fixed ratio value to the Mex
ican dollar of 60 to 100. The steady fall
In the value of sliver during the last
six months has therefore greatly dimin
ished tho valutj of the tlcal, until during
the latter part of the month-of Novem
ber, 1502, 1 pound waa equal, to 21 ti-

Our presidents attend Inaugural balls;

he could "trip the light fantastic Toe
that he was "trained In the heel."
A good deal depends on how one looks
at things. Neither the decalogue nor
sermon on the mount forbids dan
