The Bowels ^ h*nd forty freighters at F*a,” war the
I pardonable boeat of Sir Anthony GIou-
< eater; but that was in England, and
j">rne few years ago when Kipling first
'■reated him. Today, in America, our
I dry-land commerce enables one firm

five complete locomotives finished In
cv*ry detail, are set down upon'th*
rails by the giant cranes at that one
rhf.it. and ep* * d away north, south, and
w»-st, to bring the logs down out of the
Canadian forests, the ores out of 5Jox-
l-o, to sail a mile a minute over the
rolling prairies, and climb tHe moun
tains of the West, or to be loaded bod

At the thought of so larg* an output
two questions come immediately :o
on** s mind: How is it pop‘lb!<- for a
factory to turn out locomotives at Ihe
rate of five n day, and once they are
built what becomes of them?
Ah to disposing of them, there sc»ins
to be no difficulty. On the contrary#
they can't be built fast enough. At the

works I visit*-1. th** orders for
comotives wore a year ahead of lh>
/hops, notwithstanding they had pur
posely p-duced their foreign trade from
about 40 per cent. In 1900 to about ::0
In 1901, and ntlll lew for the pr#P'*:'t
d on many roads engines were
being used beyond the period of their
onomlcal life, because new, or even
< ond-hand ones In good repair, could
Ither be begged nor borrowed. It Is
-t that locomotives wear out at tuu-h
rapid rate. They will run. with prop-
repairs. for fifteen or twenty years:
but the railroads are growing. Each
year there are nearly a million more of
us who ride, and proportionally more
freight to carry and more places to ear-
.* It to.
As to the other consideration—how ho
...any locomotives are built—that is a
more complicated affair. The secret of
it all is reducing things to certain stan
dards or types, and building great num
bers of engines, all exactly alike, In
these standards.
A locomtlvo begins, like many a less
worthy machine, In the foundry. There
are the tall, dark chlmney-Hke cupolas
In the distance with the molten iron
running out of them; there are the
grent pots swinging to and fro on the
cranes, pouring their livid contents Into
the Iron boxes wherein the sand is deft
ly moulded to give the metal its re-
quired shape when It has cooled; and
here are the disordered heaps of black
sand from which you see the parts of
future locomotives being dug up like
treasures from an ancient city. They
are the cylinders, for the most part, as
will appear when th<* sand Is dug out
of them.
Tin* modern locomotive of the more
powerful type |s apt to have two cylin
ders on each side: and these, with their
accompanying valve chamber are cast
all In one piece together with the sup-
?>nrt for the front end of the holler.
If you will follow the making of one
of these castings, you will see that the
‘dusks” that Is the boxes In which It
Is Cast -are made especially for that
one purpose; that the ladles carry Just
the right amount of metal t„ pour Into
It, and later you mriv watch It being
norod cuit In a special machine which
horns out the circular cavities for both
pistons and the valve all at once at a
tremendous saving of time.
