MACON’S MANUAL
TRAINING SYSTEM
Mexican Drawn Work.
SEE WHAT WE HAVE TO
SHOW IN THIS POPULAR HAND
method of manual training
ployed In the public schools of Macon
and Bibb county is fast becoming i
model for manual training In the puo-
lle schools of the state. As Bibb
the pioneer In an improved public
schhol system, and also m modem rea l
building, she Is also blazing the way
f" r the general adaptation of manual
training In all the schoolx of the state
t0 "' n »y«tems. as well as comi-

County School Commissioner M. I..
2“**“ nof Hancock county spent ih"
day In Macon yesterday. Impeding th-
manual training in vogue In this city.'
He was shown through all the manual
training departments of the city schoo’s
by Superintendent Jere M. Pound.
Commissioner Duggan expressed hlm-
if;. Jf highly pleased yesterday
*lth the operations of the system ;is
he viewed Us workings in nil Us
phases. So impressed was he that he
has concluded to Inaugurate the system
In Hancock.
Commissioner Duggan Is progressing
0n _ advan< *d Nnes in extending the be
neficent influences of modern education
In his county. He It was who first ir.-
■tituted the circulating library In the
public schools of his county. It w.vs
an experiment at most, when it was
first undettaken, but it proved so pop
ular and beneficial that other counties
took up the Idea.
He and Commissioner Mike Dennis
of Putnam were the first two commis
sioners to get an appropriation from
the general education board; which met
in Atlanta last fall. There were ap-

the board, and by this act they are
enabled this year to Increase the length
of their school terms some two or three
months. The board gave Hancock
52.700.
Professor Duggan found in his inves
tigation of the manual training system
here yesterday that fully to cent, of
the Vuplls above the sixth grade and
of the high school pupils take this
course. In the shop and In cooking it
is optional with the pupils to take the
course. In some of the grndes, how
ever, It ls compulsory. If the present
lick ls kept up, the system will so
permeate the entire state.
Professor Duggan will remain in t
city the balance of the week, being
delegate to the Sunday school confer
ence now In session at the First M.ip-
tlat church.

-.HV 4 *® *** would rather see a report
which said: “Absent last Sunday 6 ah-
present this" l&Mt Sunday but
He said he would also divide tht Sun
day school into four parts, flrst, pri
mary; second. Intermediary; thtrd. Ju
nior; and fourth, senior. In these re-
spectlvo classifications, he would put
[Itt e children, boys and girls, young
ladles and young men, and older peo
ple.
He would make four tests in the clss-
sldcatlons. After reporting the schol
ars, Just ss you do In the day schools.
He would then classify them ns to nge,
intellect, congeniality, and size of class.
Above all, the spenker would allow
the pupil to select his class where his
surroundings would be more congenial.
A pupil whose intellect would not w*ar-
ront the third classification In Itself,
would, perhaps, be better suited to,
such a class, because the other mem
bers were of his age, and besides were
his running companions.
Dr. Spllman caused nn adjustment
of thinking caps on two propositions.
One was to separate the boys arid girls
In classes. This may be all right In the
day school where the teacher absolute
ly sways the sceptre In his little king
dom. but the speaker admitted that he
passed through many doubts before he
Anally reached the conclusion that they
should be separated.
The present rule In the Sunday
schools was to allow them to be In the
same class up to nine years of nge,
then separate them till the nge of 21,
upon the theory that boys and girls be
tween these susceptible nges could not
study two subjects at one time.
The most stnrtllng phase of Dr. Bpll-
mnn’s talk was upon the precocious
ness of youth. The picture was not so
much overdrawn, either, when he as
cribed propensities to some overgrown
tots, to go In classes with their gupnd
mothers.
The lectifre was Illustrated with
blackboard drawings, which highly en
hanced Its effectiveness. These lectures
will be continued during the remainder
the sessions,
