text for his sermon, the tenth verse of
the third chapter of Paul's Epistle to
tHe PhiUpplans: “That I may know
irirn and the power of His resurrection,
and the fellowship of His sufferings,
being made conformable, unto His
death," the speaker said:
"This text—these words of Paul—
'that I may know Him,' gives an Idea
of tho apostle's life—a life that has left
Its Impress on the world, upon human-
| Ity, In It Is presented the Ideal, the
aim that governed Paul In his great
life work.."
Discussing the question of Ideals the
speaker said: “Just os plsnts turn to
ward the sun, so do human lives grow
toward ideals.
"All through the ages of history,"
said the speaker, “we find men who
have lived for wealth and position.
Whatever has been the machinery of
the government under which these men
have lived. It has never gone beyond
the men who have moved It—rt ha**
represented their Ideal. The same ad
dition confronts ui today. The age In
which we live la called an age of com
mercialism. It Is too much so."
Discussing the Importance of uplift
ing I !oal*. such an Meal as ruled Paul,
the speaker said: "More men and wo
men are needed to contribute from the
abundance of their resources for the
benefit of humanity In the name of
God.”
Alluding, again to the text as giving
the Ideal of the apostle's life, he sold:
'Underneath every life, marking out
ts activities. Is an Ideal which with
more than an enticing siren's song

old proverb. Continuing, he said: '.’The
human mind has ever longed for a
Utopia, toward which It has been
struggling."
Addressing the students before him.”
■lludlng to the expectations and
hope* of fathers and mothers, he said:
"The capncjtly of the person, the mea
suring up to responsibilities Is c/illed
by the expectations of those'upon
whom we t>ely. and who rely upon us
Discussing the* potent Influence of
Ideals ip moving and Influencing hu
manity, he aald: "Ideal* engage our
Interests, arouse attention and fire* tho
the person to action."
Alluding to proper study nnd
thought, the speaker mid: “The stu

Incarnation of the thing he studies—
things are viewed through the atmos
