NEW YORK, June 1.—The cotton mar
ket opened quiet at a decllno of 2 points
to an advance of 8 points. The declines
were confined to the old crop options, and
w«r« tho result of realising and selling
for short account, while the new crop
wss sustained by the low temperatures
noted In the western sections of the belt
and fears that the floods In the South
west would work down Into the cotton
country. Following the can trading be
came slightly more active under demand
for later positions, shorts covering and
the South sending buying orders, which
advanced prices sharply until a level
about 4a1l points above the closing last
Friday had been sttalned. Then there
was some taking of profits by the room
under more favorable weather forecasts
and prices worked back to nearly the
opening basis. Almost Immediately them
was another rally, however, on the mod
erate estimates for tomorrow’s receipts
at leading points; better eccounts from
New England spinning centers and a
alight Improvement li\ tho demand for
cotton goods.

NEW YORK. Juno 1.—Cotton futures
;>*ned steady with first prices 8 points
wer to 4 points higher. * Quietness was a
characteristic of the market. Indispo
sition was evident on both sides In view
of tho absence of cable advices, Liver
pool being closed. The general tendency
of local sentiment, however, was rather
firm In consequence of tin* unfavorable
crop news, tho natural result of unsatis
factory climatic conditions. The old crop
months displayed moderate support on
the part of so-called bull leaders, but the
manipulative operations were less promi
nent. Tho new crop options were sup
ported and eyes of traders generally wero
cast toward the crop center. Tho month
ly government reports were eagerly
awaited, and It was argued that It will
hardly show the true status of affairs
now, that the storm has resulted In con
siderable damage In the northerly sections
of tho belt. The shorts In the pit were
good buyer* on the wpather map. thorn
being evidence that the storm which did
so much damaro In Kansas was passing
down Into the Mississippi valley. The re
ceipts of cotton continued of good pro
portions as compared with last year,
thouch there were Indications of a falling
off In ths movement. The spit buying
was on n small scale, spinners being still
Indisposed to paying the present level
of prices. The port receipts for the day
were figured at 6.600 bales against 1.630
bales last year, while for the week the
ports were estimated at 80.000 bales
against 82,912 bales last wn*k and M.086
last year. At the close the undertone was
quite Arm.

NEW YORK, June 1—In the cotton mar
ket this morning tbs opening was at 2 to
8 points advance on very small tranaac-
tlone—the absence of business was part
ly owing to the continued close of the
Liverpool mnrkct until Tuesday. A good
deal of rain fell In the Atlantic states
and the temperatures In come of the dis
tricts of the Southwest was too cool.

NEW YORK. June l.-Our market
opened with sales of July at 11.13-1M3,

the market baa ahnwh decided strength
on the nsw crop deliveries. This la„di
to ths 'poor crop reports coming to hand,
which point to u tow statement of th<
condition by the government **n Thursdny.
Nome anxiety Is expressed at the floods In
the Mlealsalppl valley, with the possibility
of the MlMtasfppf river being filled to
dangerous overflow point. Nearby deliv
eries were neglected until after the noon
call, with very little trading. The reac
tion from the high point was slowly re
covered, with the distant deliveries ngnln
the moving factor. We need so largs a
crop next season that w«# must have most
favorable weather from now on. A de
mand for the new crop months continued
to the close, baaed on unfavorable reports,
which bring new buyers. It Is believed
a large short Interest prevails In those
petitions. Liverpool Is expected decidedly
j better tomorrow. The spot market was
! quiet at 20 points decline.
