ELBERTON, (3a., July 4.—Saturday
night a negro preacher named Walter
Quitman, and residing In that portion of
known as Pine Town (which la
inhabited solely by negroes), shot and
mortally wounded his wife, it Is stated

CARROLLTON, Oa.. July 4.—The
MandevIHe mills’ employes of the cot
ton factory department went on their
annual picnic to Holley Springs over
the Central railway's suburban train
from here on Saturday and spent the
day at this delightful rural retreat.
A special program of exercises had
been previously arranged and ppeeches,
recitations, songs, etc., together with
the reading of the declaration of In
dependence b*' Rev. W. E. Dozier, Pres
byterian pastor, constituted the liter
ary feature pf the outing.
At the noon hour a sumptuous re
past was enjoyed and during the day
the rarest of refreshments and delica
cies were enjoyed by the gay party.
All sorts of games and diversions en
gaged the party throughout the day,
and at 6 o'clock In the afternoon the
party wns gathered up and carried by
train to Bremen. There were more
than 125 In the party, the outing being
the compliment of the owners of the
mill. . *
