GRESHAM DEFEATS
CLINTON 12 TO 10
Tha crack Gresham baseball team of
Macon Journeyed to Clinton yesterday
and defeated the nine there by the score
of 12 to 10. The defeat of the Jones coun
ty team by the locals Is the second in
the past month. Th»* most creditable
work of the game for the Cllntonltea waa
performed by George Barron, who knocked
a home run with two men on bases dur
ing the seventh Inning. For Gresham,
good playing and hard hitting was done
by Carter, Sparks, Kuan and Andrews.
Kuan waa In his best form behind the bat
and threw to the bates with accuracy,
causing no little trouble to the base
stealers of the Jone* county players.
Hamilton distinguished himself In cen
ter by beautiful throws from center field
to the plate, cutting off two run*.
The treatment accorded the local team
during the day at Clinton was cordial,
and tne boys will ever remember their
Clinton friends with pleasure. _

AFTER THE GAME.
An even break.
Not ao bad for a starter.
Renfelt pitched. He went Into the
box after Bayne had been hammered
In the opening game of the series.
The acore», 11 to 0 and 6 to 4. flacon
dropping the flrat and Charleston the
second. Bayne waa hit hard during the
morning game, for the flrat time In
many a day.
Matthews again butts Into the lime
light by annexing his second win to
hla belt. Matthewa was the twlrler
who captured the 2 to 1 game from
the Tourists a few days ggo. For hla
reward of winning Billy Smith has
presented him with a piece of lucre
known generally as a dollar bill. It Is
understood that the new slabman Is
framing all his bills given him for
winning by Smith. !Ip thinks that
they may come In handy acme time.
Unlike J. C. Cantllllon. umpire, Mat
thews salts hla winnings away. His
umps alwayg draws hla salary- on the
middle of the month and lets no thrills
go by.
A record that will stand In circles of
Southern balldom for many a day to
come waa made by Little Rock and
Shreveport In their game yesterday af
ternoon. For fourteen long Innings the
Pirates and the Travelers battled, but
not a single run was forthcoming. Ef
fort* to board the Traveler* by the
Pirates were attempted, but they were
loat. Finally after the big crowd which
thronged the Little Rock park found
themselves unable to discern the trails
and the ball the umpire tossed up the
sponge ami declared the game at an
end. Without a doubt thla hns- been
one of the hnrdeat fought battles
waged In one of the major leagues of
Southern warfare.
The season of double-headers opened
with a rush yesterday, and all the bal
parka were well filled with Fourth ol
July fanatic*. With the exception of
the Cnlumhla-Augusta series, It was
an even break all around. Rincon and
Charleston fought ft out In two
filets with the result of one game go
In* to each team. The Pathfinders and
the Jays worked against each other in
a double-barreled game with an evet
break a* the result. The greatest aur
prise sprung In this league waa the
fact of the tatl-ender* trimming the
Tourists In two successive games,
the contest yesterday morning
Tourists fell victims by the score of
2 to 1. The second one was still more
disastrous for the Augusta club, as i

Stewart, the local pitcher, who waa
not taken w*tth Macon during the pres
ent trip. I» playing nt present with
Talbotton. In Barneaville. Stewart is
much sought after by a number of the
stronger Georgia team*, but Manager
Smith want* him.
The New York Nationals landed
their eighteenth straight victory yea
terday afternoon by taking the aecond
game of their double-header from the
Phillies. But six more straight wins
are now needed before the record aet
by Charlotte la equaled.
