NO DANGER
No surging, pushing, or desperate
throng of humanity was wedged in at
the ball park yesterday. No nodding
flowers flsunted^from the peek-a-boo
shirt waists of hundreds of fair mald- (
ens while the play was in progress,
neither did pandemonium ever show
any traces of breaking loose while
these Highlanders of tnfe home
helped ths Tourists to a position still
rearer Columbia. About two goodly
handfulls of the eclat were present.
These flstfulls went away satisfied and
even that helped some. The crowd In
a word was disappointing. Not so was
the game. It lagged at times It Is true,
but we couldn't expect to witness a
national league exhibition performed
before two flatfulla of yelling talent
Macon won. so it follwa that the other
aide lost This time the others were
those of Augusta. Bcorc 2 to 1.
To stsrt things moving along serene<
ly Bayne opened up the fray by retir
ing the first three haughty Tourists on
strikes. Not one of the trio, however,
fearful were their swats at the leather,
ropld connect for even a slow grounder.
It. was even the mighty Kennedy that
first was towed to the plate and then
led back to his benchmates! No won
der the next two went by the board.
Bueh luck,—for Augusta. Before the
nosing half of the ninth had arrived
eight more of the Augusta followers of
tlie bat and ball had slipped up on the
tenders and likewise retired. No tell
Ing how many more would have shared
the same dismal fate had Umpire Grim
kept hla eyes u n bo t toned throughout.
On a high ball Grim Is a wonder, ltut
on the out-curve he seems almost us
totatly lost na Is a red bug* In a fierce
Dakota bllxxard. Perhaps he will do
better tomorrow. Bayne's out Is
his strong points and when the knight
of the celulold falls to watch them
curve gracefully Its all off. Bnync has
now connected with an out us wide ns
n curve on the T. P. 4 W. To notice
its breakings calls for a great eye.
The sticky and clammy go through
which both the inficlders and watchers
of the patchos had to traverse in quest
of occasional balls was awful. Those
recent Installments of wetness served
make the diamond and outfield al
most a duck pond. Around Blake's
comer It was the worst On the next
occasion when the field is so bad stilts
have been promised the basement.
Homo one' was thoughtful enough to
make tho ofTer during the closing end
of the sixth after Wilson had flounder-
i around the paths for a tnlly.
The first chance of scoring was In
the first of the second. - Kngle had
bed first as a result of a sparring
match between a atlcky ball and the
soggy turf. The ball finally slipped
from his grasp and tho catcher landed
ifely. It was no error for Hentell. It
wss too difficult a chance and had he
scooped It up nil right it would have
happened too late to head Kngle at
first. Htlckney played the patient
ie, looking nt four had ones os they
il over the plate and plunked lnt<0
the big mil of Hnrnlsh. With two on
base and everything looking serene in
the ranks of Wlngnrd the handful on
the benches became serious though
they failed to raise the mud by throaty
yelpings. The following three men
were handed misfortune through tho
efforts of Bayne. The first two. Bus
nd Kelley, after little sparring fits
dropped easy ones to Brlndle, ho In
turn relayed the ball to first. To keep

islble and even highly pro
bable that had the balls been min
drops not enough wetness would have
collected on his stick to envelop the
wiuga of n regulation alscd gnat.
A bn -o of errors figured largely In
Macon's first run. The mispluys were
due to not only the slippery fixture of
the ground but also to nig .time field
ing 'on the part of the Augdsta Infield.
After Hentell hud lunded safely nt first,
Hoffman drove a skipper to tho In
field. While a section of the Tourist
nine attempted to corral the ball Hen

the premier outfield play of the season.
A Tourist was the guilty party. With
Hentell resting In the mud at fist Hoff
man lifted a hard and high drive to
that section of the outfield lying be
tween centre and left. Htlckney looked
al It that was all. Kennedy gave a
fleeting glance at the Hying ball and
then turned and sprinted toward the
weeds In deep centre. He turned at
the right moment and nabbed .the ball
by the stitches, Jt’s flight being so swift
that they came untied. Even the trade
mark was burned off.
Several new faces appeared upon the
talent from August. Kngle behind the
bat, Koler at short and Kennedy In left.
Kngle caught a fairly good game but
threw miserably to the bases. As an
outfielder he shines far more brilliant
ly than as a backstop. These players
