HUGHES TALKS OF
GEORGIA AT ST. LOUIS
COMMISSIONER GENERAL DUDLEY M. HUGHES ON FIRST TRIP HOME
SINCE OPENING OF GEORGIA’S EXHIBIT AT WORLD'S FAIR,
MAKES MANY INTERESTING STATEMENTS—THE STATE’S $30,000
EXHIBIT STANDS SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH THOSE OF
OTHER STATES COSTING FROM $100,000 TO $1,000,000—GEORGIA
CANE SYRUP, HAY AND NAVAL STORES PRODUCTS MAKING
HITS—“SOUTHERLAND” POPULAR RESORT FOR PEOPLE FROM
THIS STATE.
Col. Dudley M. Hughes, president of
the State Agricultural Society, and
commissioner general for this state at
Jhc St; Louis Fair, was In Macon last
night. He had many Interesting things
to say concerning the Georgia exhibit
at St. Louis and the fair.In general.
This'" Is the first trip home In two
months and all Interested Georgians
nre eager to gather from him the many
statements which hq has to make.
Georgia’s $30,000 exhibit stands side by
ride In admirable show with those of
other states khich cost from $1,000,000
down to $100,000, according to Presi
dent Hughes’.statements. The Immense
numbers of people who throng the
Poors of the exhibition halls find the
Georgia exhibit highly attractive on
account of the novelties In show and
excellently arranged exhibits.
The descriptions of Georgia's build
ing and exhibit as presented by Presi
dent Hughes Is given below.
The agricultural buildings at the
world'll Fair cover over twenty , acres
of ground and In the different sections
and divisions of these buildings the
Georgia exhibits are placed. In the
rgrlcukural buildings the state has va
rious exhibits of cereals, cotton In the
seed, lint, and bale, hulls, meal and oil.
There Is a display of cotton seed oil In
a fountain shown to very excellent ad
vantage by electrical device.
Georgia's hay exhibit' seems to be
attracting no small attention. There
are 86 varieties on exhibition and Geor
gia, known all over the tTnlon as a cot
ton state, stands shoulder to shoulder
with the best sections represented.
President Hughes and his associates
find farming classes greatly Interested
In this exhibit.
There is a tobacco exhibit In Geor
gia’s list which In attracting attention.
President Hughes states that this is a
very beautiful exhibit and while It Is
not the largest. It Is decidedly the best.
Attention Is often directed also to the
e*lk exhibit of this state. There are few
people '©yen at home who know Just
what can he shown In this Industry.
Georgia has on exhibition both the va
rious silk threads and the raw mate
rial.
Nothing on the St. Louis Fair
grounds presents Its peculiarly attrac
tive features as well as the Georgia
cane syrup exhibit. This Is kept In a
typical log cabin and dispensed dally to
the throngs of people. It Is served with
hot batter cakes and waffles by an old
Georgia negro mammy.
“This Is nqt simply attractive In the
novelty of exhibition." sold President
Hughes, ns he described It, "but It Is
an advertisement for the state which Is
counting for good. It’s an advertise
ment that Is outstripping other states.'
In the forestry building the various
woods from Georgia are on exhibit.
Hero the naval stores Interests from
the pine stump to the spirits and rosin
ore on exhibition. Thero Is a still In op
eration in the Georgia exhibit and
thousands of spectators are dally view
ing this interesting Industry of the
state.
• In the mines and mining building
Georgia has all the different marbles
' hnd granite. Its gold cxxhtblt and other
minerals. These can be found by the
the great education and Instruction
to be found there. NoN matter what
calling a person may have, he will
find something • to learn—something
great—at this fair. The attendance
from Georgia up to the present has
been good, but on the whole the at
tendance from all over the country has
not been what was expected. It Is
stated that the attendance will grow
ithin the next few weeks. how<
and expectations as regards having
people of the nation visit the great fair
111 be fully met.
This Is President Hughes’ first trip
home since the opening of the Georgia
exhiglt. and he wil remain In the state
until after the third Wednesday

Continuing with reference to the
Georgia building and the state’s Inter
ests in general. President Hughes said:
"The funds we had In hand for the
Georgia exhibit were not enough to en
able us to compete with other states
In artistic touch and artistic display,
but our display shows Just what the
slate Is doing and can do. The exhibit
Is attracting a great deal of attention.
"The Georgia bullying. ’Southland/ Is
a reproduction of the home of General
John n. Gordon and Is an Ideal South
ern home. It 1s constructed of Georgia
products. The Inside is of the finest
Georgia pine and every article of fur
niture was made In the state.
"This Is the home of all Georgians
who visit St. Louis. ’Southland’ was
erected at a cost of $14,000 from pri
vate funds, to which Macon cltlsens
contributed nobly. None of the Geor
gia fund was used In the erection of
his building.
"On the large veranda those who vls-
t St. Louis from this state, spend the
afternoons In the chairs and at the
tables writing letters and reading the
newspapers. All the dallies In Georgia
are on the tables for the visitors. When
people . from this state are gatherd
there It seems very much like a Geor
gia afternon.
"The St. Louis fair Is mammoth In
conception and execution. The flag
of every nation floats on the grounds
snd over all the familiar spectacle
the stars and stripes. All the people
of this state should avail themselves of
the opportunity to attend this fair for
