As the last departing rays of the sun
yesterday afternoon were fleeing from
the ball lot those wicked Gulls lit upon
Bayne, and aided by his own work, won
another game from the locals. But one
redeeming feature loomed up aa a sort
of set-off to the otruggle, and that la
that the Gulls were forced to play a
pair of extra Innings before the trick
was turned. Such luck. Can't the
ullde he stopped? Or are the local*
Just trying to make things a little more
even? At any rate the way that the
locals are allpplng down the ladder la
fearful. And to make matters still
worse the Gulls are rising hastily. That
loss of yesterdays cuts about a dozen
points from the margin between the
two leading clubs.
Bayne and Murray acted. Both
gents were touched raoreor less. Mur
ray got his in a way. liuyne received
his In lumps. Both nlabmen worked
their hardest to win, but somehow fate
seemed to be aglnst the Highlanders
once more, and the Gulls flew from the
park as the moist gloaming was be
coming specked with the livings of the
bullbnts. Just strike that first half
of the eleventh Inning from the sight
of the rooters and we have one of the
prettleat frays unbottled for many
day.
The Game.
Following Is the detailed story of the
first game:
Charleston goes to the bat; Hayes
is patient and receives a pass to Hoff-
rnun's corner; McKernon hit a ground
er to short who doubled Hayes out at
second. Htnlth hit safe, but was left
on first as Dad La Roque Went out
from short to first. A daring piece of
base running wns seen In this In
ning when McKernon attempted to
stcitl home. Hud not iJiKoaue block
ed Hsnilsh os the catcher was In the
set of shoving the hall Into the ribs of
Mac the Gulls would have tallied In the
grst. Umpire Mace noticed the side
play of Dud and promptly called Mc
Kernon out
Second Half—Stewart pollled on
four off halls and pussed to second on
Smith’s pretty bunt. In the play Smith
was thrown out at first. Llpe hit to
short, who threw to Dlebel. The third
baseman touched Stswsrt at third and
he wns out Blake retired the side by
going out, short to first. No runs,
one hit.
Second Inning—This Inning In many
particulars wns a repltltlon of the tlfst.
Macon secured one hit while the Birds
fulled to connect safely with the ball
or first base.
Third Inning—Bardour skied out to
Hentcll; Murray hit safe past Hoft-
mun und remained on first which
watching Hayes pop up a lofty one to
short. The Birds* part of the Inning
wns brought to s stand still by Me-
Kernon’s striking out
Second Half- Macon went out In
one, two, three order. Only three bat
ter* fared Murray, Bayne, Stewart
and Smith.
Fourth Inning-Scoring was again
not to ho had although both team*
laced out n safe hit nplece. La Roque
for Charleston and Sentell for the
Highlanders were the offenders In this
respect.
Fifth Inning*—Mitchell. Bardour nnd
Murray faced Bsyne. then the side
trotted Into the field to watch Macon
their first man around the loop.
Stinson opened the Macon part of tho
Inning by flying out to left Ilamlsh
hud a neat eye nnd waited while four
ill-alined balls sped by. Boyne reached
first on n mlsplmy. sending Nick to the
wcond post. Stewart up. The little
fielder waited for a good one and then
drove It for a safe hit to left, sending
llarnlsh home for the opening run of
the game. The next men went out
Sixth Inning—This round brought
no stirring Incidents. But one man
reached first, 8tlnaon. who died on
first as llarnlsh flew out to MltrhelL
Seventh—In this Inning Charleston
placed two players upon base but
neither scored. Macon went out In short
order, but three batters facing big
Murray.
Eighth—In this Inning the Birds tied
the score and at the same time placed
the hearts of the handful of spectators
upon edge. Murray opened by strik
ing out. He was followed by Hayes,
who hit safely to right. McKernon du
plicated the performance by smushtng
u safe one to left, sending Hayes home.
The base running of IIAye* at this
juncture was daring. He rounded the

of new things cause the downfall?
Delsel, the new third baseman of
the Guild, Is u good one. Hlu work
In the game was not up to his usual
standard as just before the game he
stepped from a train that had brought
him from Spokane. In that city he has
been plnylng of late.
The Charleston nine la in a pinch for
swat sticks. Lying upon the turf In
front of the visitors' bench were four
bats. With this array of sticks the
victory was beaten out.
Dad L&Roque seems to be still in
the game. He took fourteen chances
without an error.
Augusta continues her losing streak
and the Gamecocks art* still on the
win. But a question of time before a
reversal in the lower rank takes
place.
Some of the Highlanders were dis
posed to pick at each other during the
gume yesterday. That never pays.
