The Russian ships at Port Arthur
made a sortie early today. They are
now being pursued by the Japanese.
A severe engagement ie expected.
The Japanese licet kept off some dis
tance from the entrance of Port Ar
thur‘during the past night, fearing
danger from torpedoes In the darkness.
Nine p. m. The Russians, It is re
ported did not encounter the Japanese
fleet.

tonight, dated August 16. and giv
ing advices from Port Arthur, says
that the Japanes • during a bombard
ment occupied strongly fortified spol-
tlons with a number of siege guns.
After two hours several Japanese guns
were silenced. The Japanese, those
advices say, are no longer trying

which are too easily reached by the
guns of the fortneas, but are busying
themselves with mining operations.

TOKIO. August 10. (noon)—It
neems certain that the Rualsnn pro
tected cruiser Pallada was torpedoed

Port Arthur and has not been repor

the Central News says that the big oil
house at Port Arthur Is biasing furi
ously and that the position of the be

urging them to surrender.
