Those who rode out to the Log Cabin
Club yesterday afternoon and watched
the progress of the tournament for the*
championship of Georgia were not dis
appointed. The play of the afternoon
was fast, the weather perfect and the
courts Iq tho best of trim.
The match of the afternoon was that
betweejj Logan and Payne against
Blackshenr and Rldgely. Although the
former team won handily the game was
Interspersed with good plays. The back
hand and smashing returns made by
Payne were the best seen this yeo,r up-
the the courts of Macon. It\was
team work combined with brilliant
playing that won for the New Orleans
team. Each man knew Just the terri
tory that he should cover and he cov
ered his ground in finished style. While
Rldgely and Blackshear at times pulled
together and wor. a number of succes
slve points their piny was not near si
good as that of their opponents. As
the match ‘ progressed the losing team
seemed to pick up a little. The first
set was lost 6 to 0; and the second, 6 to
Then by a number of good efforts
the Augusta men managed to win two
games of the closing set.
By defeating Blackshear and Rldgely.
Payne and Logun are winners of tho
regular tournament. It now devolves
upon them to meet the winners of tho
tourney of last year in a challenge
match. The team that the winners of
yesterday ufternoon’s match must meet
Is composed of the two Atlanta cracks,
Clarence Angler and Sam C. Williams,
It was this teum that wrested the
championship on the courts at Log
Cabin last summer and It Is this team
that must face Payne and Lognn this
afternoon. Williams has been in Atlan
ta for the past few 4ays quite sick.
Should he be unable to play today the
match will then go to Payne and
Logan.
No matches in singles were played
off yesterday except the finals for the
connotation cup. This prize, a hand
some stein was captured by Reynolds
Tlchenor after defeating Mason and
Taylor, both of Macon. Mason went
down In two straight sets. 6-2; 6-1.
The scores wore the same In the match
against Taylor. Today Mr. Tlchenor
Is receiving many congratulations for
his successes In winning the consola
tion prize. It was accomplished only
after the hardest of efforts as he was
forced to meet some of the best players
In the tourney. ,
