CHARLESTON HERE
FOR THE LAST TIME
Closing Berios With Charleston Opens
This Aftornoon at Central City Park.
Team Expects to Riss in tho Ponnant
Tube.
Attention, ladles and gentlemen
Charleston Is here today to open with
the Highlanders the first of a series of
three games. Eddie Aahenback will be
here. also. While It Is very probable
that Kd will keep out of the game hla
falaetto voice will nevertheless resound
during the play. Put In case Macon
rap* the ball so hard that Ed’s entire
stable of pitchers are shot to shreds
then he may be seen working from the
firing line.
This will be the closing engagement
of Charleston In Macon—then at the
close of the game Wednesday afternoon
Eddie, the star filer of the covey of
birds will sail to distant cities and
there continue to win or lose as tho
dame of basebAll permit*. Tho Gulls
have been seen upon the local diamond
In three previous seta. A number of
th* games have been nip and tuck ns
Charleston ha* always presented a
strong line-up against the leaders
Charleston In fact during the last ae
ries with Macon gave the locals the
hardest set of game* yet played this
season. It wss the Gulls that battled
for seventeen Innings And then no win
ners It was the GuBs that have tied
In so many contests with Macon. Se
gura pitched against the Birds in the
premier contest of the season, that sev
enteen Inning fray. Segars works to
day. Ash will use the same sl&bman
that opposed Segars.
The Macon team hit the home belt
Saturday night. Pierce were some of
the tales told concerning the work of
Mace. “A* an exponent of baseball
Mace hasn't as much of a chance to
win out as the Washington Americans
have of winning the pennant this year,
said Billy Smith last night. Washing-
ton's percentage Is about 200 uml
Mace's stands around the .001 mark.
This Is Indies day. When Macon
played at home on Monday last It rain
ed and the ladles lost by the deni,
large attendance of ladles Is expected
out.
Although no cases of sunstroke were
reported yesterday or no meals were
cooked upon the sidewalks It was not
the, fault of the sun. Macon caught his
rays from morning till night and when
the darkness had arrived it was only
after the hottest day of the year. Good
thing it was Sunday, too, for many rea
sons. Macon's suffering humanity
sweltered and fumed. Ice water and soft
drinks were consumed by the gallon;
other potions, too, were sipped in the
vain hope of combatting the heated
weather. But *t was all to no avail. At
noon when the thermometer registered
only *9 degrees It seemed 100, and dur
ing the latter part of the afternoon af
ter the mercury had risen to almost the
top round of the tube the heat was al
most unbearable. The atmosphere was
more than tepid—It was almost sizzling
and the people fretted and fumed and
told each other how hot It was.
But through It all came out a num
ber of people unscatched and who are
today the better off for It. These are
the Ice men. From morning to night
thousands of pounds of the cooling
chunks were carted through Macon's
thoroughfares and not one piece went
hogging. “How would you like to be
the ice man.'* song came into mnny
minds nnd did seem rather appropriate
during the day.
The afternoon was the worst. Be
tween the hours of 2 and 5 it was so
deliciously hot that the dancing rays
of heat could be seen rising from the
city pavements. Those who tried to kill
time nnd escape the sweltering rays by
catching a cat nap lost out entirely. No
sleep was to bo had In even the most
cosy bed. Hundreds went out to the
parks nnd attempted to cool off by
bathing. It was nil right then while tho
swimmer remained about twenty feet
below the surface but this sort of mer
maid living does not last long enough—
It only comes in spells. As soon as the
diver would get within about two feet
of the surface the water seemed almost
on fire. Of course, he would have to
get to the top and catch a few nice hot
whiffs of burning nlr, then down to the
hom^of the fishes he would again dive.
Such sport was the more or less en
joyed by many. But in the long run It,
too, failed.
Puts an End to It All.
A grievous wall nfttinie* comes aa a
result of unbearable pain from over
taxed organa Dltslnesa. Backache, Liv
er complaint and Constipation. But
thank* to Dr. King'* New Life Pill*,
they put an end to It all. They are
gentle, but thorough. Try them. Only

GIRAFFE'S EYES.
So Placed That It Can Look Backward

From the New York Sun.
"Most people," said n veteran show

because of the length of lt» neck, but
also because of Its remarkable eyes,
which nre so placed that it cun look

all have to learn things In some way
nnd I learned this fact about the gi

“I was learning the show business

Now's your time.' said the boss,

I went, nnd the next Instant out shot
one of the giraffe’s hind hoofs.
•He could see me us well with his
