The aspiring Bird* of Gull town with
the smile that may be heard almost
ns plainly aa the gurgle of distilled
water* came and grabbed the opening
game yeaterday and then went back
to their hotel for supper with an appe
tite like harvest handa, even after hav
ing swallowed alive a large portion of
the Highlanders* pennant aspiration*.
The score when tha bleachers had giv
en out their laat gnap* and had ntarted
for the car* was: Macon 2, Charleston
Such luck!
The Birds showed speed all the way
and the way they sailed through the lo
cal athletes was worse than a sparrow
hawk through 4 convention of English
sparrow*. This, In spite of the fact
that Kegnrs was on the slab, and the
local reporters hsd already taken a fall
out of the Tourists when the team was
here last.
Mr. Hcgnrs was not hammered. It
Is true that he was hit for a total of
five safeties but the fault and loss for
the locals may bo attributed to errors
and off work at critical moments. Rea
son was punctured, lie wue eaUed
Into the fray to save his team, but the
hammering he received made a number
of daylight hole* through the deaf
mute pitcher that halls from the dis
tilled water section of Kentucky. Roa-
■on was brought Into the box at the be
ginning of the fourth. Herr had pitch
ed until that time, but the weather and
the Ice water had been a combination
one too many for him. When the mute
sallied Into the pitcher's stand Eddie
Ashenbark stepped to the first station
and from there held forth until It was
all over.
Eddie says that many of the fans
over In Charleston don't like him to
play, but had the rooters from the
sand dunes and cotton belt* of the
Palmetto state seen Happy play yes
terday never again would they even
dream harsh things against him. It
was Eddie's cruel rap In the eighth
that gent two run* across the plate
nnd nipped all hopes for winning for
the locals.
Errors lost the game for Macon. Thg
four mlsplays that were dished up by
Macon all dropped Into the play at
the most critical times. Smith's faux
pas in centre when a grounder got by,
and Seidell's fumble in the sixth al
lowed runs. Macon hit hard all along
the way. The eight safe hits were var
ied from a home run to singles. A three
bagger and two base rap were mere In
cidents In the slugging of the day.
Roeaon was plunked for exactly an
even half dozen hits, netting twice that
number of bases. In the seventh nnd
eighth two hits apiece were secured,
pair of audits netting a run.
was In the eighth that Sentell secured
hi* hotner over the left field. In the
sixth he came near slamming one over
the right garden pickets, ns It was the
ball knocked out a knot hole two Inches
from the top. Stinson lifted a fpeedy
Inshoot to deep right for three bases in
the seventh. This bombardment was
touched off by Ashenback's corking
double to left In the eighth which
brought In a brace of runs. Eddie se
cured the only hit for the Gulls that
netted over one base.
How the Runs Were Made,
Charleaton made two In the fifth.
With two men out Hnyea walked for
second time. McKernan followed by
hitting safe advancing the center field
er to second. Dad left Roque followed
by poking a hot one through tho Infleli^
The ball sped out between center and
right. Smith starting It It hit his
glove and bounded away while both
Hayes and Mac tallied.
In the alxth the Gulls again crossed
the plate. Donnelby after reaching
first on Sentell's error, was shoved
J I along to second by Rosaon'a neat bunt.
4 Ilarobour waa next up and dumped a
T little bunt In front of the plate. The
I ball waa picked up and thrown toward
♦ drat, but instead of landing In the mlt
J of Eddie It struck Barbour In the back
4 and then earrommed off to the blench-
T J while Donnelby scored.
+ Macon made her rtret run In the
t J seventh. Stinson opened by punching

Just attach- your eyes to the differ
ence between the percentages of Ma
con and Savannah and then figure out
when a meeting place will occur should
we continue to lose and the pathfinders
maintain their present winning streak.
Macon has now twenty-one more
games to play, nnd If they win out of
this number eleven games while the
Pathfinders are dropping but nine out
their next twenty-eight, we will
win by a small margin. Now It Is very
probable that Macon will corral more
than eleven of the coming twenty-one
nnd Jt Is but probable that the Path
finders will grab such a number as
twenty of their next twenty-eight. But
baseball dope counts for but little and
the fans may only watch and wait.
Columbia lost again yesterday. Hard
luck. Savannah, after being beaten.
Jumped on Helseman in the Inst three
Innings and pounded out a win.
Sentell has been playing ball of late
while in a condition nlmost calling for
confinement to his residence. While
Augusta laat week he sustained in
juries during one of the games, nnd
since that time has been under the
care of a physician. All Macon fans
regret his. accident and wish a speedy
recovery.
Bayne pitches today. Alvin has al
ways been a bitter enemy to the slug
gers of the Gulls and today he expects
to hand a dose to tho bird* worse than
ever before. "I am going to try and
make the bunch look ns though they
were stranded In a bed of quick lime,’*
SAld the Georgia slabman last night.
Viola, the left fielder for the Jays,
has been pitching a number of games
of late. Sunday he was. taken from
the box after a deal of wildness nnd
Chappie was substituted. The change
seemed to displease Pratts nnd he
showed his displeasure in a number of
ways.
