E. B. Harris & Co.
By the grace of a costly error at the
proper moment and Blake's neat hit
those Gamecocks from Carolina caused
the Highlanders to win the first of the
series yesterday and wnltx a few more
Inches toward the coVcted rag which
hangs In a secret closet in the holy of
the holies at Savannah. It was not any
very great batting streak displayed by
the locnl outfit, though Blake’s scorch
ing single did push in the winning tal
ly, that caused this state of affairs. It
came about in more ways than one and
the dash of good base running happen
ing at the critical period of the Monday
Wash Day bill, served not only to sooth,
satisfy and enthuse the select numbers
in the stand, and sun benches. But the
score—that should not be forcotten nor
should it be burled under a murky
mass of dope and kept hidden until its
all over. We won nnd the score board
said one to nit, Columbia of course get
ting the nit. Eloven innings of the most
delightful warfare were required
bring the game to the locnl coop.
There in but little to it. It was in the
last section of the eleventh round that
the one tally that brightened the game
flopped platownrd. Billy Smith wn3 the
scoring player nnd ns he floundered
across home the faithful in the stands
simply howled.
Yesterday was the first time that the
Gamecocks have been seen here since
they were so unthoughtful as to take
two of the three when here last month.
It was these same athletes that flung
the hideous hoodoo upon the helpless
Highlanders. But now It Is different,
the hoodoo is vanished nnd Macon is
getting back at Engle's bunch.
Bayne twirled for the locals, and as
a parting salute to his standbys in lo
cal fundom, gently caressed the Game
cocks before leading them to slaughter.
For eight long Innings he rcfralnod
from allowing a safe hit plucked from
his systom. Denny Shea broko tho
charm at last with a little single over
tho Infield. Then in the following inn
Ing McCarthy dumped tho veriest sort
of a scratch hit Just over Bayne’s head
und Just a wee mite out of the reach of
tho short or second baseman. One more
i drawn in the tenth and a pair
additional in the closing round.
Two of tho five punches were raked
in by McCarthy. Tho little short stop
by the wiiy pu.t in the busiest day dur
ing the contest.
Llpo on tho home brlgado cumo al
most equalling tho doings of his mate
in arms. Llpo handled a car load of
chances at his station and in addition
pulled In Aker's high fly.
Blthe hitting of the day that fig
ured in the wind up. While the visitors
were swiping In all the latest manners
at the ball those Highlanders of the
cotton belt piled up nine healthy swats.
Stinson with his little stick and Blake
proved tho king pins of Macon along
these linen. It was Blake who came to
the front and saved tho day for Mucon
in the last of the eleventh. Smith had
reached first on Daly's bad throw to
Dexter. Sentell was next up and turned
the trick nicely by dumping a twisting
bunt down the first bane line towards
Dexter. When the ball was picked up
Just three-quarters of an Inch within
the line the local mogul was sunning
himself at second and making ready
for a run In later. After Stinson hod
reached first on four wide balls, Blake
came plateward. He was toying n neat
looking stick but within its covering of
vnrnlsh wns encased the niftiest swat
that hus been rnpped hero since the
great doings of Llpo a month of two
back. Ho met the ball Just as It squirm
ed over n corner of tho gum and sent
it twisting over tho Inflclder's head
while Smith cantered home for tho one
lone tally of the two hours of play.
Stinson captured the honors of the
day for long distance swatting. Both
his two hits were tagged for two bases
apiece and both were to right field.
Even the dull boorgs made by the guns
of the bat shooters outside the enclo
sure were dimmed by the cracks of his
hits. George came to a sad fate after
I hlr first long rap, however. He was
| playing a little too far off second and
Denny Shea caught him In the act,
Denny threw neatly to McCarthy and
Mac shoved the ball into the soft place
between Stinson's ribs and the umpire
called out

Boyer's team ennnot even get a look
the coveted strip of bunting. Billy
Smith has already selected the posi
tion In center field from which the ban
ner will be flaunted at the close of the
season. The polo will be selected from
the tallest and straightest Oeorgln plno
be found. No gnarled, ragged stick
111 do to fly the rag which has coat
much hard /work.
The photograph of the tenm will be
taken this morning at 10 o’clock. Billy
Smith hna sidetracked his former be
lief that to snap the photos of the local
athletes would result disastrously.
Now he knows that tho pennant will
land here by a big margin nnd he has
done away with all hesitations.
Promptly at 9:30 today the local war
riors will meet nnd march to the pho
tographer’s, there to have their earn
est expressions converted Into paper
likenesses. Last night tho barber
shops were kept working overtime
trimming the athletes Into a presenta
ble squad., Billy Smith spent n number
hours having his brutih whipped into
shops. The other players, In place of
sporting feathered Hpn, wear a smooth
lining upon their faces nnd they had
tholr hair trimmed In the latest New
port style. Discussion was rife while
the players were awaiting chairs at
the barber shop as to whether or not
tho photo would be taken with huts
on or off.
Both the locals and tho visitors are
somewhat broken up, but In yestor
day’s game both tennis showed a re
Ivnl of their best deeds on tho dia
mond. Macon as usunl had tho best
of the batting. The visitors showed
up best .at base running. Mncon'a
work on the paths was a little rugged
at times. .
There will bo no more ladles* day
thin season. Next Monday, which In
lnbor day, will not be ladles' day, i«s
tho gate receipts of all the gumes will
be pooled. *
Bayne will probably pitch again to
morrow and then bid farewell to Ma
con until the close of the warfare m

The Columbia players again proved
