There wore three petitions for charters
filed in the clerk's ofTIce In the superior
court yesterday. The largest of these
wna that of T. P.. T. J., and C.'B. Mat*
| shall, for the Incoporatlon of the Baby-
Ease Manufacturing Company. The cap
ital stock la to be $125,000. Of this amount,
it 1b stated In the petition, that $50,000
has already been paid In. They ask to
be Incorporated for a terra of twenty
years, with the privilege of renewal. The

The Visit Was for the Purpose of Ac
quainting the Ladies’ Auxiliary with
the Nature of the Work Which Must
Be Done—A Meeting This Afternoon.
State School Commissioner W. B.
Merritt Is a guest at the Brown House
this morning. He la here on a trip In
the educational work of the state, and
had much to say. The summer session
of the legislature kept him busy in
Atlanta for several weeks, and he Is
now out for the first tlpie.
He stated last night that compul
sory education for the state of Georgia
is gaining grounds and feels that this

Judge Hodges was busy with several
misdemeanor cases In the city court yes
terday and some of the prisoners have
heavy sentences os a result. None of the
seven tried came out without a sentence
and one or two of them proved surprises

John Whittington, a white man, was
tried on a serious breach of the law In
leading an Immoral life. He was found
guilty and a sentence of twelve months
to the gang or a fine of $500 was Im
posed. .The prisoner went to jail and
will likely serve but his sentence.
W. EL Byrd, another white man. was
before Judge Hodges on r cnarge or car
rying concealed weapons. At the dose
present In a modified form along with
the local taxation. He Is in high spir
its over the indications of marked Im
provement and progress in the schools
of the state already at hand and to
come within the next live years.
The report which has Just been Is
sued by the commissioner is out from
the press nnd he said last night that
every citizen of the state who had any
part in the educational Interests of
Georgia should read and become Ac
quainted with the problems and - the
present conditions of the schools.
Commissioner Merritt points with
pride to the wonderful Increase in at
tendance in the schools of Schley and
Marlonjeounties This he says is due
to an Interest which has been taken
by the entire citizenship of the tvgo
counties. He is sure that there tfre
more counties to become interested In
a greater educational work within the
next two or three years, and he thinks
that the progress of the state is to be
measured by the progress which is to
be shown in the different county sys
tems which are now being fnst or
ganized into strong and enduring
forces which will measure in telling
terms for the advancement which is to
be welcomed throughout the atate.

directed towards arranging for the

in the Immediate present.

Death of Mr. John Jackson.
The ninny friends of Mr. John Jnrk-
ftoti will regret to learn of his death,
which occurred last night nt 8.15 o'clock
at his residence In South Macon. He
was 54 years of age and was born and
raised in the same community in which
he died. Mr. Jackson leaven a wife and
one sister, Mrs. Lucy Campbell, of Ma
con. The funeral will occur at 5 o'clock
this afternoon at his residence on Daly
street in South Macon, Rev. J, M. Bass
officiating.

A NEGRO’S MISTAKE.
Shot Atlanta Officer, Believing Latter
to Be a Burglar.
ATLANTA, Sept 1.—Charley Dun
lap, guarding the home of Mr. James
D. Robinson on West Peachtree while
Mr. Robinson and his family are out of
the city, shot Officer W. T. Morris of
the police force last night, believing
the officer to be a burglar. The wound
In not nerlous. being only a flesh wound
In his left thigh. It seems that while
Officers Morris and Brady were pass
ing the Robinson home, thoy saw a
light burning inside nnd a window
partly open. As Morris started to step
inside. Dunlop, thinking the uninvited
visitor was a burglar, he fired and
then ran up stairs to the telephone
and called up the police quarters,
wanted officers there at once to catch
the burglars. When they came they
found no burglar, but one of their own
men In need of a surgeon, who lie
Ileved that he hnd found a burglar in
the house who. after shooting him,
hnd sought refuge in running up the
stairs. Cnpt. James W. English, fath
er-in-law of Mr. Robinson, signed tho
negro's bond, and he is on duty again

Must Foot Their Own Bills.
NEW '"YORK, Sept. 1.—Josephus
Daniels, chairman of the committee In
charge of the Democratic editorial con
ference on September 7 and 8, says
that those who attend the conference
will pny their own expenses. The na
tional committee will bear the expense
of the banquet at the Wntdorf-Astoria
and of the trip to Ksopus on Septem
ber 8. At the banquet six responses to
toasts will be made by leading editors.
It Is expected that Bylvanus E. John
son, one of the Washington correspon
dents of the Cincinnati Enquirer, will
be toast master.

City Executive Committee Meets and
Fixes October 5, as Date.
ATLANTA, Sept. 1.—The city ex
ecutlve committee met in tho council
chamber today at noon and selector
Wednesday, October 6. as the t day for
holding the primnry. The committee
named this date so that both the state
election nnd the city primnry could be
held on the same day. and put an end
to political excitement for a while at
lenst. It was decided that nt the prl
mary these people will vote for an
or against ward primaries. Home of
the members of the committee were In
favor of ward primaries this year,
while others opposed and change In
the present system unless the people
so desired. The usual resolutions
were pnsped providing for the
duct of the primary, and a sub-com
mittee was appointed by Chairman
Hugh Dorsey to arrange all of the de
tails. The action of the committee
today In calling the primary for Oc
tober 5. will give candidates only a
month to get In their, work, nnd from
now on until the close of the campaign
there will be much activity all along
the line. For weeks and In some in
stances for months candidates for of
fice have been hunting votes very en
ergetically. but their work • has been
only In the nature of an exercise gal
lop. as compared with the strides that
they will now make until the voting Is
over.
