COLUMBIA. S. C.. Sept 1.—A slower
game during the first seven or eight
Innings the fans never saw, but things
began to liven up when Columbia tied
the score in the eighth. The players
walked languidly to the bat, the field-
stood motionless at the sacks mov
ing only when necessary.
Engel is on the bench for the entire
season now and Dexter acted as field
captain. The fans were very heart sick
when tho line-up was exhibited. But
Connet and Reynolds did yeoman work
In the field. In fact, saved the game In
several spots, and Kuhn seemed in old
time form. The Macon team Is also
slightly altered. Sentell, the best short
field in tlio league, is in the hospital,
and Llpe played In his place today. A
new man, Cook, who has been Import
ed from Atlanta, played third base.
Something was wrong somewhere. A
cog was loose and the machinery did
not run smoothly. When Hoffman and
Bayne both went after & foul early In
the game and Bayne dropped It. there
was a small tete-n-teto between them,
and later on Shea and Dexter indulged
In a bit of charming bantering. Kelly
was also off a bit on balls and strikes.
Somo of the fans thought Kelley did
some funny work In other decisions.
Kelly has always been regarded as the
most conscientious umpire In tho
league. The feature of the twelve Inn
ing contest was the pitching of Bayne,
who it Is rumored, has been signed by
Powell of Atlanta.
as sending over a very superior
nrtlcle today and added a good bit to
his strike out record. Alvin was for
tunate in his batters though. Ilcisemnn
was as usual wild at the start and pre
sented a number of men with bases.
He steadied down and in the last In
ning wns In splendid form.
In the eighth when Blake hit Kuhn.
Jimmy touched Stinson on way to
second base and threw to Dexter, put
ting the hitter out This was only two
out but there was so little in the
game that the Highlanders started to
take the field.
Chandler Inserted an error In the
eighth Inning right on the Jump,
doesn't show on the offlclnl score but
i an error. He let McCarthy's
fly fall slowly and precisely Into the
grass Just at his feet. Kuhn was call
ed out on strikes and Dexter went out
to Billy Hmlth who caught It near the
On Llpe's error Shea went to

Chandler fumbled the ball. The score
was tied nnd unexpectedly too. The
only Incident of the tenth from the Mu-
standpoint wns the funs thought
thut Daly put Hmlth out ut third base
but Kelly said ho didn't and tho only
Incident from the Columbia standpoint
wns that Bayne yielded his first nnd
only baschlt on balls to Dexter. Akers
wan at second hose In tho eleventh
when Gunter came to but for Connet.
The crowd yelled uproarously, Gunter
promptly struck out.
The Official Score.
Yesterday afternoon at Central City
park the All-Macon team defeated the
O. Bernd nine by tho score of 10 to 4.
The game was slow and uninteresting.
In the first two Innings the Bernd team
made four runs to none for Macon.
Stanley Business College and East
Macon meet In a benefit game for the
Georgia Industrial Home at the purk
tomorrow afternoon. Many tickets
have been sold nnd a good game is ex- 1
pected. Walker nnd Crawford will be
the battery for Stanley.
The bog trotters of Savannah won
again yesterday from the Jays. Five
straight games have the everglnde
warriors dropped to the players of
Mull. It’s a twenty to one shot that
things will bo somewhat different when
the trailers strike the Gulls of Charles
ton. Ash hasn't any love for Mull nnd
the series will be fought out between
two bad rivals.
Macon left for Columbia last night,
accompanied by their opponents of the
last three days. Three games are
scheduled ot Columbia. Then the
Highlanders retufn to the local park
for a series of three with the Jays.
This serlcB will ho the Inst *tt the park
this season, os tho Macon team closes
the season at Jacksonville. On Mon
day a double-header will he pulled oft.
Hoffman's fielding average ns a first
baseman must top the Hsf with n nice
margin to spare. Dutch has been han
dling about fourteen chances per game
of late and but few errors have been
committed.

After the Game
Both leaders tied up In their frays
yesterday. This came as quite a re
versal of matters. Savannah won eight
straights snd Macon three—then came
the knotted contest for the leaders and
the Pathfinders.
The local fans os they clustered
about the score boards In town yester
day expressed a variety of sentiments
after hearing of tho wind up of the two
gabies of the leaders nnd trailers. Al
though Savannah moved onward with
n great rush for several days their
streak of winning has been kinked.
Today they are due to lose.
Bayne had luck of the palest green
hue yesterday. His team mates piled
up a box full of errors. Ifad not
these mlsplaya butted Into the fleeting
moments of play it |* quite likely that
the fourth straight from the Gamecocks
would have been ours. The locnls hit
with vigor enough to connect with
any ordinary contest but It was the
bobbles that did file work.
