COLUMBIA. S. C.. Sept. 8.—The High
landers took the last game of the series,
winning two straight and a tie from a
crippled but still fighting team. Most
of the runs were made on errors. Gun
ter was not flt to play, and It was easy
to see that he was terribly handicapped
by his knee.
Dexter was In the box for a few Innings
and was doing.quite well. He had fine
speed and fair control, although he gave
six men bases on balls. Ills arm. how
ever, was In no condition to use In the
box, as it is a long time since the big
fellow has pitched, and in the sixth he
wad replaced by Connet. Dexter replaced
Beusse at first base.
Columbia pulled herself out of the hole
by good playing in the first and third
Innings, only to loose the gnmo In the
fifth. Harntsh hit and Polchow was given
Ills base. Dexter errored In ^handling
Ltpo’s short Infield hit, and threw wild
to Beus3e and the runners scored. Smith
nl30 got his base. Stinson flew ovft, and
Blake also, but Smith and Lip© came In
while Akers held the ball, making the
throw lh too late to catch the men at the
plate. This made four runs.
Columbia did good work in the sixth.
HarnUh was pinned between second and
first base, * and Hoffman attempted to
score, but was caught at the plate.
Ilarnlsh was caught at second base, re
tiring the si Jo.
In the eighth, Hoffman got a two-base
hit through Gunter ana Chandler scored.

MONTGOMERY. Ala.. Sept. 3.—W.
H. Ragland tonight sold the Montgom
ery franchise of the Southern League
to E E. Winters, general manager of
the Montgomery Traction Company,
formerly of Macon, and ihe striking hall
players were paid their salaries. League
President Kavanaugh sanctioned the
sale. The franchise was disposed of by
Ragland for a cash sum, said to be $5,-
000. This ends baseball troubles In
Montgomery, as the new owner is con
nected with tfle street railroad compa
nies on whose lines the games were
played last year and no further injunc
tion proceedings will be had. Although
salaries had been guaranteed the play
ers by Umpire Latham on behalf of the
League, the men refused to don their
uniforms today and the two games
scheduled to be played were forfeited to
Nashville by scores of - 9 to 0.

After the Game
Two straights and a tie with the
ithletes of tho Palmetto state. Such
was tho cosy record made by the High
landers In their last Invasion of the
Columbia stronghold. Quite n big dif
ference was this outcome from that
made In Columbia when Macon
there last time. Then It was four
straights for tho Gamecocks. This
time they had to be contented with a
one tic.
tVhlle the locals were casting an
chor In the Gamecocks yesterday as
tho parting salute of the year’s work
with the Carolina team the aspiring
Pathfinders nipped both games of tho
doubleheader from the Birds of Gull-
town. In the two contests the Savan
nah team made six runs while Eddie's
men made but one. Savldge secured a
shut out against the visitors while Con
Welsh let them down with one lone
tally.
Jacksonville and Augusta broke even
yesterday, Dovey winning hi* and Per
sons dropping hls for the everglade
athletes. Bagwell, the new twlrler of
the Tourists, won from Persons. Too
bad Bakwell did not join the ranks of
the Tourists In an earlier purt of the
season.
There was no game at Montgomery
In the Southern league circle* yester-
day as the Montgomery player* refus
ed to go to the park. The ghost has
failed to walk, it Is nlirgod. for a num
ber of weeks and the players declared
that unless their pay was forthcoming
no boll would be played by them this
reason. Just how the situation will be
settled Is doubtful. * The Montgomery
management. It is learned, has made
little or no money during the season
and therefore the present state of af
fairs.
Macon has now but seven more
games scheduled, all of these being
with the Juys. Three of the games are
to be fought out on Florida soli and
four amid the red hills of the cotton
belt. Out of the seven games Macon
should take at least four. If this should
bo the case she would land the pennant
by a nice margin even If the Pnthflnd-
ers should land all their seven remain,
lng conflicts.
Tomorrow (Monday), will not be
ladles' day at the park for the reason
that the gate receipts of the games
here, and in fact ell over the circuit,
will be pooled, and each manager tak
ing a like amount of tho collected coin.
Wanted—A flag pole, constructed of
select Georgia pine, nine thousand feet
