About onu-thlrd of the book will b* de

which the admiral will say In his pro-

operation against Cervera's fleet, the pur
pose haa been to record the event* from
the writer's own viewpoint; to criticise
In a spirit of fairness, but without malice,
bearing In mind that wherever It has been
necefcsury to refer to apparent Inconsis
tencies In the statements of others, the
author has endeavored always to avoid
unnecessary personalities. Through the
courtesy of Secretary Moody, recourse has
been had to official papers which were
not a vn liable before his accession to of

The remainder of the largo volume will

SHORT HILLS. N. J„ Sept. 10.—
The umatcur championship tourna
ment of the United States Golf Asso
elation, which begun last Tuesday and
ended today on the links of the 13a 1<
tusrol Golf Club, was won by II. Chan
dler Egan, of tho Exmoor Country
Club. Chicago, eight up and six to
play. He defeated the young Brook
lyn plsyer, Frederick Herreshoff, who
attends school near Pottstown, Fa.,
and who was entered from the Kkwa-
nokn Country Club, of Manchester, Vt.
When the play was over the general
verdict was that tho expected had
happened and that the champion golf
association had well earned the title
and accompanying prises by clever,
clean, persistent work throughout the
tourney.
The weeding out process brought the
big field of 111 down to Egan and Her
reshoff for a final round of 1C holes
today. The report of the game In de
tails shows that the Chicago man got
Into a playing stride far too swift for
his more youthful opponent and the
first half of the match was over
whelmingly In Egun's favor, ns he was
nine up at the eighteenth hole. For
the first time two holes, second round,
HerreshofT played an even game with
Egan, halving both, but Egan won the
next, The play was steady until the
end at the twelfth hole, which was
won by Egan. 3 to 4. This gave him
the match, eight up and six to play.

Gallant Firemen Do Brave Deed at
New York Tenement Fire.
NEW YORK, Bept. 10.—More than
a score of women and children were
rescued from a fire in a five-story
tenement house at No. 001 Tenth ave
nue early today. The blase started
under a stairway on the second floor
and spread quickly to the roof.
The most sensational incident of the
Are was the rescue of a mother and
two children who had taken refuge on
the ledge of a window on the fourth
floor. It was made after a conspicuous
show of bravery and resourcefulness
on the part of two laddermen. The
woman and children had been driven
from their apartment by the flames
and were clinging to the ledge crying
for help when the firemen arrived on
the scene. When a .35-foot ladder was
thrown up ugalnst the side of the
burning building it fell four feet short
of tbt fourth story window. There
was no time to make a change and
.two men rushed up the ladder. Bat
nncing himself on the topmost round.
whf)e his companion flrmly grasped his
legs from a more secure position be
low, one of the laddermen caught the
children as the mother dropped them
Into his arms. Other firemen had
taken positions on the ladder by this
time and the rescued ones were passed
down from their dangerous position.

First Mass, Heavy Artillery,
Army of the Potomac, past
commander in the Union Veteran Le
gion, and a prominent Grand Army
man, writes from the Museum, U. S.
Dept of Agriculture, Washington, D.
C., as follows:
“1 commend Peruna as a most agree-
ablo aa well as effective medicine. Ca
tarrh and catarrhal colds are checked
and generally cured by a judicious use
of it. . Peruna is a good promoter of
digestion and is an excellent remedy
k stomach. It tones up the
appetite and is not at all disagreeable
to take/'—Col. Nathaniel Shatswell.
Mrs. W. E. Grissom, Henry, Ellis
county, Texas, writes:
. “I took Peruna faithfully over two
months, and the result is a thoroughly
renovated system and a strong, buoy
ant feeling, to say nothing of a cure of
the chronic catarrh. Therefore I shall
avail myself .of every opportunity to
speak of Peruna aa a catarrh cure."—
Mrs. W. E. Grissom.
A great many remedies to tempora
rily relieve catarrh have been devised
from time to time., such as sprays,
snuffs, creams and other local applica
tions, but, as a rule, the medical pro
fession has little or no enthusiasm in
the treatment of catarrh.
