CUMBERLAND, Md., Oct 11.—Hen
ry G. Davis, Democratic vice presiden
tial candidate has made a flying start
on his whirlwind campaign through
Maryland and West Virginia. Leaving
Baltimore this morning on a special
train over the Baltimore and Ohio rail
road, he has made an even dozen
speeches, arranged the details of every
meeting. Introduced hts corps of cam
patgners to the audiences In nil the
West Virginia towns vlslted.has struck
out vigorously on state issues, done
the greater part of the talking nnd to
night is -the freshest from fatigue of
any member of the party.
Talks From Private Car.
Rallies were held tonight In Pied
mont and Keyter, West Virginia, each
of an hour’s duration, and several oth
ers of half that time. Many of the
talks were made from the rear of the
private car Graceland. occupied by Mr.
Davis and hts campaigners.
The reception tendered the candi
date and his retinue of speakers was
uniform In courtesy nnd was marked
by enthusiasm varying according to
the size of the audiences and the pop
ulation of the towns visited.
At the meeting here Mr. Davis pre
cluded with a few remarks and turned
the meeting over to Mr. Hill and Sen
ator Daniel. Mr. Hill dwelt on the
tariff to a considerable extent, arguing
the necessity for a revision no matter
what party was successful In the elec
tion. Senntor Daniel touched upon the
live Issues of the day presenting a pic
ture of Republican mistakes and of
Democratic prospects.
Had Band Along.
RRUNSWIOK. Md., Oct. 11.—The
Davis speclnl was joined at Washing
ton by nn escort representing the five
Democratic clubs of the District of
Columbia, who occupied a special car
and were'accompanied by a band. The
party was headed by NatlonnI Com-
mltteemn Norris and accompanied the
special to Brunswick. At Rockville,
Mr. Davis. ex-8enntor Hill nnd Sen
ator Drthlel made speeihes.
Mr. Davis briefly claimed Maryland
as his native state. Speaking of his
nomination he said:
"I had no more to do with it than
yon. M Turning to Mr. Hill he con
tinued:
“1 waa telected by this distinguished
friend and I supposa I owe him a great
deni for the trouble ho has got me
Into.”
Senator Daniel told how Mr. Davis
left Maryland fifty years ago ns the
conductor of a freight train. “Now he
Is conducting* another train made up
at fit. Louis and Is heading with full
steam on to Washington. There is a
seat for every good Democrat on that
train and Mr. Davis Invites you all to
ride.”
“Rut what will be the result If the
Republlacr party should succeed?'
asked Senntor Daniel. “You would
hnve elected the president of the United
States, emperor of the Philippine is
lands. king of Porto Rico, sultan of
Guam, monarch of Hawaii and the
great panjandrum with a little round
button on the top if the Republicans

Republican Rofrigorator Procods to
’ Jolly tho Agriculturist*.
MARSHALLTOWN, la., .Oct.. 11.—
Senator Fnlrbnnks made here tonight
the last of u scries of ten speeches de
livered stnea leaving Omaha early this
morning. At Iowa Falls Senator Fair
banks dwelt upon the prosperity of the
farmers. He said:
“An eminent Democratic authority
some tltno ago, In tho hope of winning
the support of the gernt agricultural
vote, asserted that the Republican
party had done but little for the farm
ers of tha country. He contrasted tho
expenditure of five or six million of
dollars for the support of tho agricul
tural department with expenditures for
the support of other branches of the
federal service.
“Hit statement was not entirely sc-
curate, though he did not mean that
It should fall short of the absolute
truth. Tho Republican party hns not
only appropriated over five millions
of dollars for the support of that de
partment, but it appropriated more
than twenty millions of dollars ut the
last session for the support of the rural
free delivery service throughout the
United States. That servloo Is one of
the fruits of the Republican adminis
tration.
“More Important thnn these are the
benefllts coming to the farmers of tho
United Htuton through tho beneflclent
operation of tho policies of tho Re
publican party. We huve found every
where among the furmers of the coun
try where I have been that they havo
been able to pay off mortgages Incur
red during Democratic administrations
with the fruits of Republican pros
pcrlty. In all of the cities und vll
lageH through great agricultural ro
glons farmers have money on deposit
the bunks. They havo bocome In
many places money lenders. Down In
KnnsnH, the other day, I learned that
many of tho farmers of that stnt
of Oklahoma had Invested In tnllllonn
of doilnrn worth of the Philippine bonds
floated In the United States, nnd
learned further the fact that the farm
era of some sections of our country
have Invested their savings, won un
der the Republican administration, in
the bonds that have been negotiated
by one of the powers now engaged In
war In the far east.”
