The ambulance at the city hospital
was kept buay last evening bringing
to the hospital Injured men. The first
call was to South Macon, where a negro
had been seriously Injured. The sec
ond call was to the freight yards of
the Southern railway to get Will Bas
sett, a brakeman, who had been hurt
about the head.
The first call came In about 8 o'clock
and the ambulance at once hurried to
South Macon. Arriving at a point near
Herrington's atore the driver was di
rected to a blacksmith shop near by.
The ambulance surgeon found Loula
Dillard, a uegro blacksmith, In a crltl
cal condition. His skull had been
fractured and the man was unconsci
ous. The trouble that led to the
broken head Is said to have been the
result of a dispute between the negro
and a white man who wished some
work done. Just what Immediately
led to the blow Is not known. When
Dillard's wounds had been dressed he

WANTS FRANCHISE
The Athletic Association of Mercer
University Held a meeting yesterday
morning for the election of officers, and
men were chosen who Will serve In the
several offices for the ensuing year.
Much enthusiasm was manifested and
the students went Into the election
with great Interst In the choice of each
nren.
The choice of officers for the Ath
letic Association at Merer has for sev
eral yeara created strong Interest In
the election, which is customarily held
at the beginning of the college yeer,
end this time there has been unurial
Interest on account of the prominence
given athletics at the Institution.
The nominations were made at yes
terday's election and the officers were
elected by acclamation where thare
was no opposition for the office.
The officers for the ensuing year are
as follows:

Vice-president, L. C. Gilbert, Ma
rietta.
Secretary, O. G. Johnson. St!oam.
Treasurer—R. M. Bolton, Milner.
Athletic Council—Chairman, E. T

the faculty, and from the student body,
William Rhodes. Alpharetta; O. C. Grl-
ner, Nashville; J. D. Underwood, Cleve
land.
It will be seen that Professor E. T.
Holmes and Dr. B. D. Ragsdale are
again the members of tbe faculty on
the athletic council. These members
of the faculty were on this council last
year, and under Professor E. T. Holmes
as chairman the athletic Interests of
Mercer were well, cored for. He is
chairman for the present year.

President Kohler Receives Flattering
Offer to Place Macon Team in Other
State—He Declined to Consider a
Deal.

President Felix Kohler of the Macon
baseball c^ub received a few days ago
letter from'a man living in one of
the prominent North Carolina cities
offering the local ball magnate a neat
sum should he wish to transfer the
local club to that state. Mr. Kohler
answered the letter st once and re
spectfully informed the writer that
there wan absolutely nothing doing In
a matter of a sale. In the letter Mr.
Kohler was offered a handsome sum
should he deslra to manage the team
next summer, and also enough funds
to carry the team through the sum
mer'* campaign. The man that wrote
tho letter Is prominently connected
with the street railway company, and
po doubt the concern is bnrl’.iiur the
movement. In answering Mr. Kohler
1 elated to the author of the letter that
all arrangements for the coming sea
son had been perfected and that tho
local club would remain In this city.
He stated that , there L was no difficulty
here In raising hftsehall funds and that
he did not cure to remove ball fiom
the local lovers of the sport.

injured about the head by a flying brake
stick. lie had mounted the top of
box car and while attempting to, twist
the stick hi the brake wheel the stick
was torn loose from his grasp by a

C. 8. Crawford died Sunday night at It
o'clock at his home at Balnbridge
where he had recently moved from
Buena Vista. Ills remains were
brought here for burial Tuesday Mr
Crawford leaves a wife and several
children. He was aa brother of Judge
W. D. Crawford of Buena Vista, and
while a resident of this place he held
positions of honor and trust, having
tilled the office of mayor of this town
for several terms,
