VALDOSTA, Ga.. Nov. 22.—Lown-
<le» .uperlor court 1, In aea.lon hero,
with Judea U. O. Mitchell of Thomas-
llle, presiding. Yesterday was de
voted to or,anisine court and to hear
ing one or two small olvll cases. The
regular civil business was taken up
today. The most Important cash on
the civil docket Is that of W. G. Van
Nordon vs. the Savannah, Florida and
Western road, a suit for 150.000 dam
ages for alleged permanent Injuries
while getting oft of a train here sev
eral years ago. Hon. Hoke Smith of
Atlanta Is here representing the plain
tiff, while Judge Joseph W. Bennett of
Brunswick, Is looking after tho Inter
ests of the road, assisted by Messrs.
Cranford and Walker, the local coun
sel. This case promises to be the most
hotly contested that has come up here
In a long time.
The criminal docket will be taken up
later in the week. The most Import
ant cases arc those against Ben Penny,
charged with the murder of M. Car
ter at Naylor In September, and
against Reuben Knight and Will
Knight, accused of accessory to the
crime. These cases also promise to
bring up a hot fight, as eminent coun
sel are employed on both sides.
Convicts Returned,
It Is stated here that four of the con
victs who escaped from West, Holmes
& Coffey's camps near Lake Park, sev
eral weeks ago, have returned. One
of them boedme lost In tho sWampj
and hired a negro to show him hack
to the camps. The other three return
ed of their own accord. They sty they
made friends with the track dog and
kept it In the woods with them for
several days. They also say that two
of the others who escaped at the same
time will come In as soon as one of
the guards ts dismissed, but that the
other two will not give up at all. The
men who returned laughed about the
escape and said they Just run off to
show that they could do so. It Is be
lieved that the very cold weather had
much to do with their return, as a
convict camp Is much more comfort
able than the swamps and woods dur
ing cold nights.
Ingenious Negro.
A negro named Luclous Jordan was
arrrested yesterday on the charge of
robbing Marks store In a very Ingen
ious way. The nogc° went to a rear
window which was broken out and by
using a long pole fished hats from tho
store and sold them to negro boys
on the outside. He sold several of the
hats, two negroes being caught with
them and lodged In prison while they
were attending the mayor's court. The
negro who did the stealing went to
the cell to ask tho two boys not to give
him away when they called an officer
and had him arrested.
Romantic Wedding.
A romantlo wedding occurred several
miles below this city Sunday, the con
tracting parties being Mr. Cleveland
Wlsenbakcf, a son of Mr. ''Jim Stump”
Wltcnbaker, and one of ”6ld Gro
ver”s first namesakes In this section,
and Miss Clyde Patterson, the pretty
daughter of G. W. H. Petterson. Ow
ing to the ages of the couple thorn
was objection to the wedding, so they
planned a ruse to get around the ol.l
folks. Miss Petterson and her sister
went to church at Antioch and the
groom went with his cousin. T.ie
couple met there, and the young mm
having provided the license, they sent
for a Justice of tho peaco to perform
tho ceremony. Tho Justice met them
about a mile from the church and per
formed the ceremony In ».te middle of
the road while the couple remained
seated In their buggy. The ceremony
was witnessed by the groom’s cousin.

BRUNSWICK POUTIC8.
Both Sides Confident on tho Evo of
Municipal Election.
BRUNSWICK, On.. Nov. 2.—On the
eve of the municipal election both sides
seem to be confident. Indications seem,
however, to point to the election of
R .R. Hopkins, a prominent real es
tate man. for mayor. Judge Crovatt,
the present Incumbent, hits mode a
hard fight and his frlsnds nre still con
fident. At least three thousand dol
lars has been wagered on the outcome.
The Hopkins ticket for alderman Is
. Newman, L. A. Robinson, J. P.
Golden end J. W. Watkins. The Cro
vatt ticket for aldermen is W. R.
Dart, I.. Ludwig, H. S. McCrary and J.
Stovall Smith. The campaign wa»
apathetic until Sundny morning. Since
then circulars, newspaper articles and
other campaign literature has been
freely used. The campaign has been
characterised by freedom from mud-
sllnglng. Credit ts due primarily to
the white primary system which was
established last year through the ef
forts of the present supoprters of the
Hopkins ticket.
Rats Yesterday V/ns Top Figu
the Year.
NEW YORK. Nov. 22 --The rote for
call money, which opened at 2'i per
cent this morning, advanced to 1 per
cent early this afternoon, a consid
erable amount being loaned at the
high Ilgure. In the lnat hour of tho
market the rate went down to 2%@3
per cent. The high rate of today is
the top figure for the year. Several
reasons were advanced to account for
the sudden rise. Among them Is tho
fuct that some of the large banks to
day called loans with which to hus
band their resources and other banks
which have right along been loaning
large amounts on coll were not lend
ers today. Added to this la the com
ing bond sale by the city and prepara
tions to meet certain large corporate
payments.
In tho last half hour tho rate again
advanced to t per cent but closed at
314. Among the lenders of money to
day were J. P. Morgan & Co., who
had not been active In the money mar
ket for many months.
