THE MACON TELEGRAPH : SUNDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 27, 1904,
MILITARY ORDER
IS DISCUSSED
Three Macon Companies Not
Affected
TIIEIR CAPTAINS TALK
'1
Two of Local Companies Are Already
Within Limit, One Having by-Law
in Conformance, and the Third Has
About Sixty Men—A Good Order,
Say the Captains—The Change Af
fects Many Other Companies in tho
8tate.
The new order relative to the num
ber of men in the Georgia military
companies which was issued a few
days ago has not reached the Volun
teers, Hussars and the Floyd Rifles in
Macon, but the companies have been
making preparations to comply. It is
generally effective, but will not change
any membership in Macon other than
that of the Hussars and this will be
gradually done.
The Volunteers have a by-law which
haa been in force for more than two
months that prohibits the enlistment
of more than fifty men. The Floyd
Rifles have a membership which will
not be touched by the new order on ac
count of the fact that at present the
number is within the limit and the
Hussars have about sixty men at
present.
The course to be followed in reduc
ing the number of men will not af
fect the company on account of the
fact that the new order allows a reduc
tion as the enlistment expires. This
course will be followed with the Hus
sars.
The general opinion in Macon Is
that it will tend to contribute better
soldiers where there have been large
numbers enlisted, but this will not be
the case here, because the three com
panies have stood between the
thirty-five and fifty limit for a long
time. The Macon companies have
*ong ago realized that the best com
pany is not the Inrgest one. As a re
sult there are none affording a better
membership than thut found in the
Viree Macon companies.
Captain Starr of the Floyd Rifles
stated last night that this company
v/ould still be unchanged when the or
der reached him. He finds tho mem
bership already in such condition as
to fully conform and there will be no
change. He had nothing to say as to
the general effect of such a law.
Captain Polhlll Wheeler of the Hus
sars stated that his company number
ed about sixty and thought the num
ber would bo reduced by allowing the
enlistment to expire in a number of
Instances. "The law is a good one in
my opinion,” said he. "We are gen
erally looking for good men and this
means that we will be forced to choose
the most preferable of the applicants
when there is a possibility of going be-
yond the limit."
Captain Hazlchurat stated that the
Volunteers had their full number at
present but had been running for some
time in accordance with the by-law
limiting* the number to fifty. Tho
company by-law exactly fits the new
military order and the Volunteers will
not be forced to any alterations.
"It’s a good thing for the military
companies.” said Captain Hazlehurst,
in discussing the order. "The state is
better able to provide for the smaller
companies and the companies them
selves are abler to chooee the strong
men. The Macon military companies
are in excellent condition und have
long ago learned that the best show
can be made with the small company
of good men/*
The order which has made it neces
sary to change companies In many
towns throughout the state hue been
Issued and will go to all the state mill
tla within the next few days. This
order la aa follows:
“No company of Infantry, cavalry or
artillery, white or colored, shnll have
upon its rolls more thnn fifty or less
than thirty-five enlisted men. Includ
Ing all reserve enlistments in the max
imum. Companies now having an on
llstment exceeding fifty men may re
tain the surplus men in service until
expiration of their present term, but
no new enlistments will be permitted
until the strength is reduced below
fifty men. No company will be Issued
equipments in excess of fifty of any
article, except such as Is Issued to
officers, and all companies now hav
Ing more than thnt number on hand
will report the surplus without delay
to this office and hold same subject
to further Instructions.”
cf the "freaks.” One.was made of leath
er and looked more like a large in
verted funnel than a receptacle for
horse whips. The small iron bound,
three sided affair was ipade to hold
another line of merchandise. A cy
lindrical leather receptacle stood near
the edge of the sidewalk. Just what
It contained is not known. From its
heighth it might have held a dozen or
so of base ball bats. Possibly It did.
Every now and then the city Is visited
by a man of the road having in his
possession all kinds of freak recepta
cles for his special lines. Men hand
ling candles sometimes bring their
wares along In cases resembling more
the kind used by a practicioner of med
icine than anything else. Still the
two are often closely connected. Sweeta

A combination of bare feet and legs
and an overcoat la not a usual sight,
but now and then tha passer-by will
run across just such a condition
things. The coat Is generally more
less the worse for wear and is supple
mented by a tattered hat rimmed with
a crop of towaled hair.
Late last evening down near the de
pot. staggered a small errand boy about
ten years old, carrying a number
bundles done up in white paper, and
wabbling distressingly under the in
secure tether of amah strings. He wore
an overcoat but neither shoes or stock
Inge. He must have been In queit
parties wishing to board outgoing
trains as at intervals of flvo minutes
or less he would make a trip through
the waiting rooms and Inquire for
person to whom the packages had been
consigned. The pavement were cold
and mustiiave sent Icy stivers up and
down the bared legs. Still the lad did
not seem to mind and continued
search till at last the right party was
found. His endeavors were rewarded
and he left the depot wearing an ex
pensive smile. He was headed to
nearest restaurant when he crossed
street, anticipating steaming coffee and
a wedge of pie.

Although Christmas is yet over
three weeks distant, the spirit of the
day is creeping Into the air with a
rush. With the Thanksgiving holidays
past, Christmas'is becoming the all-
ibsorbtng topic and preparations fur
the observance of the day are being
made. There was u certain air last
evening through the business sections
of town distinctively like that which
possesses a city when Christmas la
than a month off.
Macon merchants have long since
extensive plans for a large bus
iness before the Christmas holidays.
Already the storekeepers have begun
place t'heir Christmas stock where
may be seen by the prospective
buyer. Merchants have begun to re
ceive fireworks. The fru’t stands of
city know the nearness of the holi
days and have well supplied them-
with fancy nuts, raisins and
other articles that make up a regula
tion Christmas diet. Small cakes,
heaped in large baskets and crowned
a shining tin cup. attrack the gaze
not the purses. of passers-by.
These are by no means the only
signs of the nearby, holiday* In the
homes the children are at work with
calendar and keep a close tab on
fleeting days and hours. As each
twenty-four hours pass by a blotch of
black is dabbed upon the record of
days. This is the season of the year
when the small boy la at his best, not
only to those at home but at school.
task is Impossible and the more set
aside for the youngster the better he
likes it. The parents all over the
town ha\*e noticed the over-goodness
the part of the small boys and wink
themselves about It.
The sporting editors on the news
papers of the country are getting a
little lonesome these days. Baseball
gossip whs shelved, with the wind-up
the season and now even the dope-
sters of football are finding the time
hanging rather heavily upon their
hands. The turf season Is almost over
and tennis finds but few devotees even
the South these days. True, the
indoor sports attract a deal of atten
tion but their worth compared to the
sports enjoyed under the open skies
amounts to but little. The theatres
offer a chance to turn one’s attention,
but there are no theatres in operation
some cities at present,
in enterprising gentleman has
nearly completed his arrangements for
opening a skating rink in Macon. It
was his intention to throw tho doors
open on December 1 but the day of
opening may be postponed because the
carload of skater; has not yet arrived,
though on the. way. He will have
fine hall and also a teacher in skating,
and will so arrange the matters that
the skating will appeal to tho social
life of the city.
You have been talking it over long enough now and you know your
business needs it, so why not make your business a Christmas present
in the shape of a FILING SYSTEM for your correspondence for the
coming yeur?
We have the most complete and accurate meth
od in exlsten'O. We are now making a specialty of
BUSINESS SYSTEMS, and If you would like to
have this correspondence Filing scheme explained,
we would take pleasure in doing so.
Of course you don’t want to swell your 1904 Purchase account, but
don’t forget that the bill will not fall due until 1905.
