hundred merchants and representative
citizens here today signed a letter to
President Francis of the fit. Louis

phraseology of Governor Vardaman’s

tax assessment at Mercer. A petition
was before the body asking that the
tax assessment on the lunds of' the In
stitution bo reduced from 550,000 to
520,000. As soon as this was rend

rally favoring the denial.
Alderman Jones stated that ho did
not believe in taking It out In the tax
assessments, hut claimed that the may

been good enough to Mercer to havo
some recognition In the matter of glv-
ing the scholarships.
Alderman Sloan was proud of both
Mercer and Wesloyan and was glad to
know of their success, but thought the
city ought to have tho appointments to
Mercer.
The motion of Alderman Happ pre
vailed and the communication from
acting President W. H. Kilpatrick of
Mercer will be considered and a report
will ho mado by the committee on
scholarships at the next meeting of
council.
