MONTHLY SUMMARY.
WANTED TO DIVE.
Tho Weather Bureau’s Idea of Crop
Conditions Issued.
WASHINGTON. Dec. 1 The weath
er hureau’s monthly summary of crop
conditions is as follows:
’’As a whole, November was a very
mild and exceptionally dry month.
Throughout the central valleys nnd In
New England, the middle Atlantic, cen
tral and west gulf states, the absence
of rain was so marked as to prove In
jurious to fall sown grain and to hin
der plowing. The drought has been
especially severe In the Ohio vnlley,
where there Is a great scarcity of wa
ter for stock and domestic purposes.
”In the principal corn states the
weather has been favorable for husk
ing and crlhbing corn, the reports In
dicating this crop is of exceptionally
fine quality.
“Winter wheat has been unfavorably
affected by drought over the greater
part of the winter wheat belt. Favor
able reports are received from the At
lantic coast states, where, however,
lack of moisture has retarded growth.
“in the Southern states the weather
conditions were favorable for the com
pletion of cottpn picking.”
J. P. Martin’s Effort Was Restrained
• by Two Mon.
ATLANTA, Go., Deo. 1.—It required
the combined strength of two strong
men to prevent J. P. Martin of Mari
on, N. C„ from diving out of a fourth
■tory window of tho Kimball last night
the paved street below, on the Wall
street side of that hotel. Martin had
been Irrigating his system rather free-
wt(h “booze,” and in this condition
was carried to the Kimball where he
was assigned to room 412 on the fourth
floor. He rebelled against being stored
away for the night and a friend who
was with him, secured the services of
special officer of the hotel to assist
him In getting Martin to his room.
When this friend and the officer had
accomplished the feat of landing Mar
tin in the room to which he had been
assigned, they told him good night and
turned to leave.
“Well, if you are going that way I
will go this way,’’ said Martin as he
threw up the sash of his window and
started to plunge out Into the open
space. The officer and friend, however,
were too quick for him, nnd grabbed
him by the legs. The man's body was
out of the window when thd rescuers
fastened upon his legs, and by hard
work pulled him back Into the room.
Had they followed the tactics of Gas
ton nnd Alphonse even for the fraction
* a minute, the pulverized body of J.
Martin would today be resting In
some undertaker’s stnbtlshment. In
stead of this, however, ho Is In full life
and vigor today and says that he In
tends to brace up nnd return home.
The rescuers of Martin after they had
pulled him hack Into the room conclud
ed that it would be best to send him to
police headquarters for the night, and
this was done.
